OH’s prom on Apr. 27 was a combination of fun, color, and joy around every corner. Although many students loved the new venue and its improved menu, there is still room for improvement next year.

In a poll of OH students who attended prom, 100% of students rated the overall atmosphere of prom at three or above on a scale of five, with 16.7% rating it a five. Students seemed to enjoy the “Rio Carnival” theme and eccentric decorations orchestrated by the OH Junior Class Council.

“Overall, it was really good. I thought the decorations fit the theme very well and were cute,” said sophomore Ava Maxwell. “The prom committee did a really good job.”

However, students did not love everything about prom, as 50% of the respondents to the survey ranked the DJ and music at prom as a two or below on a scale of five. The DJ this year played a majority of student-suggested songs, however, there is still controversy over the quality of the music played.

OH students seem very conflicted on the issue; “More rap music, less Taylor Swift,” one respondent answered. Another said, “A majority was rap music that a lot of people didn’t seem to know. I wish there was more variety to meet a more widespread music choice.”

“I feel like there a lot of the same songs, I didn’t like how much rap they played,” said Maxwell. “A lot of the songs were too long and not a lot of people knew them, so they were just standing awkwardly.”

Another aspect of prom that students disagreed over was the food on a brand new menu by the Matrix Club. Students had a three-course meal, complete with bread and salads, a chicken or pasta entree, and a slice of cake for dessert.

“I thought the pasta was pretty good for big catering,” said junior Greta Woelke. “I was pleasantly surprised.”

Many students polled didn’t have such a positive response, with 16.7% ranking it a one out of five. Students have explained that they wish food ingredients were more readily available and that the food rollout was more streamlined. Since there were so many attendees at prom, some tables were completely finished eating by the time others got their food.

One thing that students can agree on is that they loved the venue, but they wish the dance floor could have been larger. With nearly a thousand students attending, the dance floor often felt cramped and spilled over into the seating areas.

“The dance floor was a little small, which made it hard for everyone to participate in the dancing,” one poll respondent said.

All criticisms aside, this new venue and its awe-inspiring decorations proved to create an absolutely memorable night for all its attendees. The Matrix Club provided a lively environment for OH upperclassmen to celebrate the end of the year and spend a joyful night with their friends. Ultimately, with the number of different opinions expressed about prom, the Junior Class Council couldn’t satisfy all of them, but they did a great job of making it as enjoyable as possible for everyone.

Hopefully, with the feedback provided by students this year, prom ’25 will be the best one yet. Student comments about food, locating the bathrooms, or anything in between will be greatly beneficial in making prom even more fun than it was this year.
