Looking for a lighthearted movie to make you laugh and fall in love with love again? I highly recommend one of the newest and most revolutionary movies in the rom-com genre: Anyone But You

With a 6.3/10 on IMDb, this movie is no blockbuster, but it promises fun and an oncoming obsession with the song “Unwritten” by Natasha Bedingfield. The story follows two stunning leads, played by Glen Powell and Sydney Sweeney, as they attempt to repair their broken relationship in time to celebrate the wedding of Sweeny’s sister and Powell’s childhood friend.

“I love rom-coms, especially because I feel like they are easy to watch over and over again without getting sick of it,” said junior Gracie Nachtigall. “This one was the right amount of romantic and funny and I think that’s why I loved it so much.”

What the movie lacks in a complex plot, it surpasses with its lighthearted tone and renewed passion for the rom-com genre. The movie seamlessly balances complicated relationships, difficult miscommunications, and a tour around Australia to entertain audiences and deliver a heartfelt message.

“The chemistry and dynamics I was seeing on the screen were making the story believable in a way that was hard not to love,” said junior Jayden Doty, “and I was smiling through the whole thing.”

Rom-coms in recent years have been cliche after cliche. I never feel excited to sit down and watch a new movie because they always feel the same. This movie shook me out of this movie slump. While it dabbles in traditional tropes like enemies-to-lovers, it provides a fresh take that makes it stand out from all its contemporaries.

“It is very hard to be unique in the genre, especially after the golden age of the early 2000s,” said Doty, “but they made this story one that stands out in my mind and can be held up amongst those great rom-coms that the world has loved for so long.”

I think anyone in the love or summer spirit should definitely go see this movie, it promises one hour and 43 minutes of laughing, crying, and everything in between. Even if you don’t enjoy traditional rom-coms, this one uses witty humor and immaculate chemistry in the cast to suck you right into the story.

“Honestly there isn’t much I would change about this movie,” said Nachtigall. “I would definitely see it again, and I really enjoyed watching it in theater. 10/10 would recommend.”
