As the school year comes to a close, OH students find themselves with more free time, and they are planning what they’re going to do with it.

Sleep? Hardly. Students report aiming to use their time to practice a new skill, taking in concerts, or soaking up the leisure time with friends.

“With Color Guard, I’m gonna try to audition for it next week, and I’m going to, hopefully, make the team, and practice and perform with everybody,” said OH freshman Teaghan Cooley.

In addition to her goals with OH Color Guard, Cooley is seeking to grow her talents with horseback riding. “I’m going to be going [horseback riding] more frequently, trying to figure out if I can get my own horse and just keep learning.”

Even over the summer, many students like Cooley will sink plenty of hours into time commitments.

“For Color Guard, they’re like three to five hour [long practices], and then for horseback riding, it’s three to like eight or nine hours, like three times a week,” said Cooley, talking about the time commitments.

Other students plan to kick back and enjoy some entertainment for their summer.

“I have a [busy] concert [schedule],” said OH senior Savannah Morris. “I have two concerts, actually. I’m going to Megan Moroney in June, and then I’m going to Noakan in July. So I’m really excited.”

Summer can be a time to go back to things that people haven’t experienced in a long time. The season creates a sense of nostalgia.

I haven’t been to a concert since I was, like, eight. So it’s been a long time, so I’m super excited to go,” said Morris.

Despite some students graduating from OH this year, they continue to use their skills from high school in the future.

“I’m going to be on the ISU campus for band camp for color guard… I’m very excited,” said OH senior Jae Kimbrough. “[ISU band camps] are very different [compared to high school band camp] I would say, and I feel like… it’s a more enjoyable experience overall,”

Overall, the students of OH have many things they would like to do over the summer, but the ultimate thing that matters is being able to enjoy themselves freely without any stress.

“[I will] get better tan lines than I would at band camp and just be able to enjoy myself,” Morris laughed,” [and] have a lot of free time, and make money at work.”
