Senior Column: Learning to take risks

When I first expressed interest in joining this publication, my mother was skeptical, and honestly, I don’t blame her for thinking that. During middle school, I was a shy kid who always tried to find a way to get out of group work, and she rightfully had concerns about whether this class would be a good fit for me. However, I pressed on, requesting to take Digital Journalism 1, and she relented. Now, I’m writing and editing my last articles as a Features Editor and am forever thankful for the time I got to spend here.

As the graduating class of 2026 spends their final days at OH, many of them have already committed to their next steps after high school. To help them find that path prior to May 1's national commitment day, many used the OH College and Career Center. “I usually ask [[students]] to pick five things that they think will make them successful in college that have nothing to do with the major and nothing to do with the finance," said OH Head of the College and Career Center Tracey Kroger. "How far away do you want to be? Do you want to be in the city? Do you want to be in the country? Do you want to be at a big school, at a small school?”

Marcus Antonio Rubino, Secretary of State, has been appointed to become the Mayor of Oswego. It was announced by President Tonald Drumpf on Truth Social. “Rubino is an incredible Secretary of State. I’ve decided to make him from some random village in Illinois, while I won’t be able to point to it on a map, I can assure residents that Rubino will NEVER LET YOU DOWN,” stated Tonald Drumpf, on Truth Social. This appointment came as a shock to Oswego residents, who questioned the legality of the move.

On Feb. 28, the United States and Israel launched a surprise attack on Iran, starting a full-scale war between the nations that has engulfed the Middle East, with consequences that affect residents of Oswego, and OH students are feeling the impact at the gas pump. The war has sent shockwaves through oil prices because Iran is a major exporter of oil and is estimated to have 10% of the world's oil reserves. Since the war started, global oil prices have risen 40%.  “I think [[there was]] close to 50 or 60 cents per gallon price increase. I think it’s... leveled out a bit, but there was a time right when the conflict started where prices went up close to 40 cents in an hour,” said OH Consumer Ed teacher Lucas Frauenhoff.

Between Mar 19-21, Illinois YMCA Youth and Government’s yearly program concluded with a meeting at the Illinois Capitol to debate issues in actual political facilities. According to the YMCA Youth and Government website, “Illinois YMCA Youth & Government is a leadership development program for high school students,” according to the YMCA Youth and Government website. This program influences many students across the state, especially at OH.
