Spring break planning season is springing up on us, and if you are stumped for ideas to do with friends and family, check out this list of eight ideas to spice up your week.

“Traveling is expensive and usually unnecessary. There are plenty of things that I have been wanting to check out but haven’t had time right here,” said OH sophomore Laila Green.

The SD#308 break is from March 25 to April 1. The extended break due to Easter falling on March 31, leaves a perfect opportunity for a variety of activities to be done.

Make a playlist

Make a spring break playlist with your and your friend’s favorite songs to live out your spring break with. You can make shared playlists on Spotify and Apple Music, but you can also make pretty playlist sheets to hang in your room to commemorate spring break 2024. You can also get creative and learn how to use LimeWire to burn copies of CDs for each of your friends to play during car rides.

Museums

On a budget this spring break? Chicago museums offer free museum dates where visitors can experience them for free. To name a few, the Adler Planetarium is open to the public for free every Wednesday from 4-10 pm, and the Shedd Aquarium is open for free on Tuesday evenings in March.

Another is the Art Institute of Chicago, however only certain areas of the museum are open to the public without charge, more information can be found here. Nonetheless, a museum experience adds a certain spring to one’s spring break.

Navy Pier

If you enjoy spending time in Chicago and want to experience something fun and different than walking through all of the high-rise buildings, take a trip down to the pier. There are many silly shops to check out and even a Margaritaville restaurant. Spend a day browsing the plethora of interesting places, including a store dedicated entirely to fun and crazy socks, and get dinner at one of the many restaurants the pier has to offer.

Mini Golf

If you come from a mini golf family, you know the fun of discovering a new course that you haven’t done before or revisiting one that you’ve done before and trying to perfect it. However, even if you don’t, you can always get into it with your friends.

There are a variety of courses in the area including Stone Creek in Geneva and Lost Mountain Adventure Golf in Woodridge. If you want to go the indoor route, check out Puttshack in Oakbrook and grab some food while you are there too.

Regular golf

Pick up a new leisure sport like golf. There are tons of golf courses in the area along with many places that do simulators and lessons for reasonable prices. X-Golf in Geneva and Naperville is a great option because they have simulators that track stats and virtual access to any course across the country for practice. There are also local courses like Fox Bend, Blackberry Oaks, Phillips Park, Whitetail Ridge, Orchard Valley, and others. Many of these places also have lessons with PGA-certified instructors.

Riverwalk

Spend a day in downtown Naperville. We have some of the most beautiful cities in our area that often go overlooked due to our proximity to them. Naperville is one of those cities. Go get a coffee at one of the many coffee shops, grab a snack or some sweets, take a leisurely stroll along the riverwalk, snap some pictures with your friends, get a bite to eat, and end your day by browsing the stores in the area.

Outdoor movie night and backyard camping

Have an outdoor movie night and camp out in your backyard with friends. Use a projector and a white sheet to create a makeshift movie screen on a fence and put on a new movie or a cult classic, cozy up with snacks and your friends, and have a movie under the stars. Bonus: Set up a tent in the yard with the opening facing the screen for covered fun and a place to crash after the movie.

Cafe hopping/boba runs

Spring break doesn’t have to be about fulfilling scenes straight out of a coming-of-age film, but it can be as simple as having a tasty little treat with friends. Finding new places that serve delicious treats like pastries and candies brings out the glutton in all of us and helps us indulge in the moment. What more could you want than good company and something sweet that seals the deal? After all, they say that acquaintances are merely just friends you haven’t shared a drink with yet, instead, it’s not alcohol, it’s boba.

Taro, butterfly pea, strawberry matcha, or just regular milk tea, the boba possibilities are endless. Mixing and matching milk tea flavors with boba- either tapioca or popping boba creates unique and unforgettable flavors—alternatively, some places like VIvi Bubble Tea offer topping alternatives like flan pudding and coffee jelly.

We hope that this list gives you inspiration for a fun spring break. Go out, have fun, and make memories.
