Fantasy football is a popular trend for OH students as the NFL season begins, and OH students come together as a community to participate in this activity.
The digital era of the game started in the 1990’s, and now has over 60 million people playing yearly.
It’s a game where students draft NFL players as a group and throughout the season, students receive points on how the player performed in their NFL game.
Sometimes students create a reward for the winner, or even a punishment for the loser.
“ loser has to run a Milk mile,” said OH junior Jack Royster, referencing a trend of someone who drinks a gallon of milk and then runs a mile, trying not to get sick. However, “the winner gets $200,“ Royster added.
While some students feel incentives like this increase motivation for the game, OH students tend to look forward to fantasy football all year as it is only a seasonal game up until the NFL season is over.
“Fantasy football makes watching football so much fun and brings a little competition to the table,” said OH junior Kobe Rios. “I enjoy that I can do it with my friends and love waiting for that last place punishment.”
Fantasy football is a very enjoyable and fun game to play with friends and family. Students at OH find fantasy football very fun and entertaining.
“I love competing against my friends and creating crazy punishments for the loser and a good prize along with bragging rights,” said Rios.
Fantasy football can also be harmless with friends, since some groups don’t have punishments and can just have buy-ins. This does not make the game boring because it still motivates and brings students together since they still have money to win.
“If you win you get 100 bucks,” said OH senior Peter Stewart. “There’s no punishment because we got to buy in.”
Fantasy football originated in 1962 by Wilfred “Bill” Winkenbach (part-owner of the Oakland raiders), Bill Tunnell (Raiders PR director), and Scotty Stirling (Oakland Tribune writer).
