On Sep. 16, the OH Varsity Girls Flag Football team beat Yorkville 19-6.
This was the newest chapter with their rivalry with YHS, which started 0-41 in their regional game, and their victory exemplified the training and collaboration that the team has been working on since the start of the season.
“We play really well, it’s a lot of communication while playing with other teammates,” OH senior and player Amiah Roberts said.
During the game, the team got to show the skills and improvement that they’ve made since playing Yorkville last year.
“I’m very excited,” said senior Captain Thalia Aburto. “Knowing that this is my senior season makes every game and every moment with my teammates feel even more meaningful.” Aburto, a 2026 Chicago Bears High School All-Star, has two total points and one safety this season according to MaxPreps.
During practices, players and coaches watch tapes of previous games. This allows them to find where they can improve both their defense and offenses, learning from past weak points to grow with each game.
These practices and games help them understand where they need to strengthen their plays and strategies, helping each other with snaps during warm ups, showing good sportsmanship.
“You can be a player on and off the field by being supportive and showing your team’s pride,” Roberts said.
As the rivalry game progressed, Panthers took the lead by scoring two touchdown passes, leaving the score during the second half 12-0. “It’s a good learning experience,” Roberts said.

“I am very honored to be selected as junior captain,” OH junior Captain Addysin Roberts said.
Having this rivalry game towards Yorkville has shown the girls flag football team that a lot can change within 5 minutes of each quarter, especially the 4th quarter. The team practices each day before games to aid the progression and hard work they’ve been working on throughout the season practices.
“I would definitely tell [prospective players] to go for it even if they aren’t confident or they’re scared,” Aburto said.
With this new chapter of seasonal games, they showed out and have shown many skills, especially during this most recent game. But as good as the skills get, the biggest goal of the team is for players to put in the effort and achieve their personal bests.
“You have to give it your all, that is what the coaches look at,” Roberts said, “and they look at you if you aren’t afraid.”
