“Amnesia: The Bunker” is a horror game released by Frictional Games on June 6, 2023. The game is set in the “Amnesia” series that started with “Amnesia: The Dark Descent”. Newer “Amnesia” games were not doing well, until “The Bunker” came out and turned the tables around for standards on “Amnesia” games.
We expected this game to be as boring as the previous two releases, but our expectations were exceeded by a pretty large margin.
“Amnesia: The Bunker” follows Henri Clement, a French World War 1 soldier fighting in the Battle of Verdun, who wakes up from a coma in an isolated bunker without remembering any prior events to what happened. The only thing he knows is that all of his comrades are dead and there’s a creature inside the bunker with him.
This game is very well done, it’s scary for the entire playtime because the creature doesn’t stop following your character. This game doesn’t hold your hand, there is no map and nor direct objective, it just gives the player a revolver and a flashlight and lets the game continue.
The problem with this style of game play is that you are more tempted to go to a site or watch a walk through of the game to know where you need to go and what to do. It makes it harder for new players to get into the horror genre because if it was hard for us who are experienced with horror games, it would be very hard for new people.
The scare factor of the game was top notch. Any loud noise will attract the monster to your location, even when the generator lights are on. Sound is a big part of this game because the unsettling ambiance manipulates the player’s mind. The revolver and a few grenades are the last resort for scaring off the monster, but sometimes that can’t even save the player.
Game play was annoying at times but immersion makes up for most of it. The creature’s AI is really thorough in trying to find Henri, so the player is hiding for about 10 minutes before it goes away. Occasionally your character can get stuck on hit boxes from things that are invisible.
The story was mostly unimportant to “Amnesia”, as the game has little connection to the overarching series. The origin story is revealed to the player as the game progresses. Notes and stories share eerie tales of soldiers experiencing the growing creature inside the bunker, letting the player know how all of this happened up until Clement woke up.
The graphics are one of the things that stand out the most for this game and only add more to the terror. It makes the player feel uneasy and makes the realism of the game more satisfying.
“Amnesia: The Bunker” has satisfied both of us. The horror was done really well with the creature and sound ambiance of the game with immersion setting the player into really being scared and nervous in progressing into the story. Frustrations were little bugs in the game, not knowing what to do for your objective, and the unpredictable AI. Overall, this game has earned a nine out of ten.
