Dune, Part 2: A sequel sought and well-received

Dune: Part 2 was released worldwide on Feb. 25, 2024. The first film received loads of attention and was heavily praised. The sequel was anticipated and was overall received very well.

The cast includes Timothee Chalamet, Zendaya, Lea Seydoux, Austin Butler, and many more. The entire cast did very well and it was satisfying to see how far some of these actors could go.

“I loved the film since I love Dune. I liked pretty much everything about it. I liked how the story is confusing, but the overall plot is easy to follow. It’s just those little details that bother me, and I’m assuming it did for other people,” said OH junior Tennyson Penrod.

Dune and its books are well done but a problem with the films is that anybody, as a new viewer, won’t get it. We watched Dune 2 with some friends who had only watched a recap of the first movie, and they just kept asking questions. I (Oscar) didn’t even know what was going on other than the main plot and I read the books.

It’s annoying that it feels like they didn’t try to make it easy to understand. It’s not making it easy for people who want to get into the Dune series. The main plot was easy to understand for people who already read the book. People who hadn’t yet struggled to understand what was going on.

“Dune is so significant nowadays because of its ‘newer’ ideas. Like an idea that wouldn’t really be brought to the table today. It also has really well-known actors like Zendaya and Josh Brolin,” said Penrod.

According to Slate, the original Dune was written in August 1965. Herbert wrote the book to reflect on the political events happening at the time, such as the Soviet Union being active.

“The cinematography was just amazing. You can watch the movie without sound and still enjoy it. It’s crazy how a movie can have that look. I kept asking myself how much this movie cost,” said Penrod.

This movie was very beautiful. I sort of feel bad for the CGI artists because I can only imagine the time and manpower it took to construct the movie. Out of everything in the movie, the cinematics were my favorite.

“I would like to tell people to watch this movie, but again, it’s really confusing for people who are going in blind. I’m probably going to be doing it anyway though,” said Penrod.

This movie will earn an eight out of ten. The two biggest problems were how confusing it was and that this movie was long. It’s not specific to Dune 2, just mainly a problem that films are three hours long now and most people definitely don’t like it. Overall, though, this movie was great. The time spent watching it was amazing and here’s to hoping that a sequel is just as good or better.
