The Oscars held its 96th annual ceremony on Mar. 10, 2024, located in the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. The ceremony was hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, who I personally think was a very bad choice for a very exciting year.
Winners for this year included Cillian Murphy for best actor, Emma Stone for best actress, and The Boy and the Heron for best-animated feature, according to the official website.
go“I thought what was expected to win, the favored films or actors, was pretty fair, as winners goes. It was a really tight race for a couple of them, though, at least for me. I make it a point to watch every Best Picture nominee before the Academy Awards aired, and I have been doing this for the last ten years or so,” said OH teacher Amy Severinski. “It’s a great way to keep informed and have an informed opinion on what should win and what does win.”
Big fans of the annual event sit down to watch every film that is nominated for an award.
“I was rooting for Oppenheimer to win the most awards. I liked a lot of movies that came out but Oppenheimer was definitely peak, I’m happy it got treated right,” said OH junior Tennyson Penrod.
Many expectations were held for the Oscars this year. The response was overall positive for the event and for what was nominated.
“I was really happy that Ryan Gosling was nominated for Barbie – he was my favorite part of a movie that I already thought was unique and freshly done,” said Severinski
Ryan Gosling has become a trending star recently and was very deserving of a nomination this year. His talent for acting has always been above and beyond.
“I’m glad Oppenheimer won for best score because the music was just so beautiful and well fitted into a movie. Ludwig Goransson did the best he could do for the movie,” said Penrod.
Personally, I am happy that Godzilla Minus One won an award. It retold what a Godzilla movie actually was and the visuals were super good.
“The Best Supporting Actor category is always a hard one for me because each one of those actors are so good in their roles in their films. I think the academy thought it was time to recognize RDJr,” said Severinski. “He’s been in the industry so long, and his comeback story is always one that people admire and respect. This happens sometimes. I would have liked to see Ruffalo, Gosling, or Sterling K Brown win over him, but I understand why the academy voted the way they did,” said Severinski.
Robert Downey Jr. was definitely the most talked about for this event. It has been too long for him that he hasn’t won anything. He said that Oppenheimer is the best movie he’s ever been in, and he’s right. The best supporting actor was stretched very thin on who should win.
The Oscars this year met expectations well and didn’t disappoint me for the most part. It has been met with positive reviews overall and every award was deserved. Upcoming films are something to look forward to this year.
