Editor’s Note: This piece contains spoilers for “The Housemaid.”
Recently, a new movie, “The Housemaid,” came out on Dec. 19, and seems to have been quite a hit with audiences of all ages.
Originally based on a book series of the same name by Frieda McFadden, Sydney Sweeney plays young Millie Calloway who starts working for a couple, The Winchesters, as a housemaid.
The more she is around the family, the more she starts to uncover secrets they’ve been hiding, and things aren’t as perfect as they seem.
One review on IMDb.com says, “The film starts in a familiar territory, but gradually proves to be more engaging than expected. At first, I assumed it would be the typical film about a familiar psychological drama, but it goes much further than that.”
We completely agree.
The movie includes lots of plot twists – secrets – that viewers may not see coming, seeming to lead into another film based on the way it ended. This would make sense as the film is based on a book series from McFadden.
OH senior Alize Rodriguez said, “My favorite part of the movie was when they played the song by Lana Del Ray, ‘Cinnamon Girl’.”
This song was very fitting for the film because of the line, “There’s things I wanna say to you, but I’ll just let you live,” because Andrew Winchester, the husband of Nina Winchester, was having an affair with his housemaid, Millie.
Millie Calloway, who is also considered an ex-convict, is struggling to find a stable job and a place to be other than her car. She interviews with the Winchester family to become a housemaid, and it seems to be a great deal, as it includes a place to stay with a beautiful home and family.
Millie gets the job and begins her first day, but she gets abruptly woken up with doors slamming, plates smashing, and Nina screaming that Millie “threw away her speech notes.”
Nina shows many signs of mental illness and repeatedly puts difficult situations. She learns from the neighbors that Nina once attempted to drown and kill her own daughter, Cecelia, along with attempting to take her own life.
The movie takes a wild turn, and OH Junior Ellie Whitacre said, “I did not see the plot twist, was definitely not expecting that, but honestly made the movie way more interesting.”
Andrew isn’t just the husband who cares for his wife; he has a hidden identity that Millie could have never seen coming, turning her into one of his victims. Intentionally putting Millie in the same situation as Nina was once in.
Turns out, Nina had intentionally hired Millie to get out, because it was her only way to escape her psycho husband.
This movie comes with many twists and turns, and it will keep you on the edge of your seat.
Get some popcorn, some friends, and go watch this thrilling, mysterious film.
