The best way to encapsulate summer energy is through music. This summer countless music events occurred, including festivals like Lollapalooza and Summer Smash, as well as concerts like J.Cole, Bruno Mars, and Megan Moroney.

“[At Summer Smash] you see a lot of artists, you see a lot of different types of music, you can discover new kinds of music,” OH senior Victoriana Arriaga said.

Summer Smash is perfect if you enjoy rap, are looking to make memories, and discover a new favorite song. It is a three-day long event and takes place in Bridgeview, just outside of Chicago. The festival features over 50 to 75 artists across multiple stages, ranging from major, well known headliners to underground rap artists.

Another festival is Lollapalooza.

OH senior Sam Stoller said, “I think there’s a lot of good value in going to see a music festival like Lolla.”

Lolla, or Lollapalloza, presents the opportunity to experience a diverse amount of music. This festival contains all types of genres, such as pop, rap, alternative, country, etc. It is a 4 day event that takes place in Grant Park in downtown Chicago.

The expenses for live music can be pricey, but many who have experienced it say it is worth every penny.

“[At Lollapalooza] you see a lot of different artists for the price you’re usually paying to see one artist,” Stoller said. “And on top of that you’re usually getting a better view of that artist than you would if you’re paying to go see someone at the united center.

So if you are contemplating on buying those tickets, many recommend you do it, because the memories made last a lifetime.

Arriaga, who attended Lolla, said, “My favorite memory was seeing Chief Keef play Love Sosa.”

It is a great opportunity to spend time with loved ones, too. “My favorite part was seeing Oliva Dean and seeing her with my sister,” Stoller remembered. “We always listen to her songs in the car. So actually seeing her live was a really fun experience for us.”

Festivals are fun, but if you plan on going, it’s good to be prepared as you look ahead and save money for summer ’27. OH students that went to Chicago summer music festivals this past summer shared their tips and tricks.

Arriaga said, “Stay hydrated, wear sunscreen, and try to see as many artists as you can.”

Stoller said, “Come prepared, definitely bring all your things, bring a water backpack, like be ready because it’s crazy. There’s a lot of people but if you’re ready and if you’re prepared you’ll have a lot of fun.”

Even if there are elements to be prepared for, Arriaga said it is all worth it in the end.

“You’re around a bunch of people making memories, taking photos,” she said. “I think you can’t put a price on that.”
