The entertainment awards season is unquestionably one of the most thrilling times of the year for avid viewers. People who watch the events love seeing the upsets, the celebrities, the thrills and the chills.
Most American award shows do not allow people outside the organization to vote. For example, the Oscars and Grammys are only voted by members of the organizations and must be invited by the memberships to join the voting cast. At least one OH student thinks that should change.
“Instead of [just] the awards members voting on the categories, they should let us, the people vote on it so we can get our voice and opinions out there,” said OH junior Tessa Ruch.
Award show ratings and viewership have gone down in recent years, likely because of changes in the style of viewer habits, the trend of streaming services, and huge shifts in the entertainment industry.
Studies show that 53% of Gen Z believes that awards are out of style now, many say that they would rather see it on social media than watch it.
“I feel like award shows are becoming more irrelevant now,” said OH sophomore Oscar Diaz, “[because] people [are] upset about their favorite artist or producer being unable to win mainstream awards.”
Most people say the awards should be shorter to keep their views high. This makes sense because half the time is spent talking about what a celebrity is wearing, or a celebrity gives a very long speech, which I think is not necessary.
Ruch agrees with me. “Yeah, they can most definitely change the length of the pre-showing of the awards,” she agreed, “and the unnecessary parts they show in the award ceremony.”
They also could add more comical, engaging parts to the award shows. For example, if a singer wins, they can sing or show a mini preview of the album or an unreleased song. For comedians, they can do a funny quick stand-up act.
Even though there are some negative parts to the shows, there are still a lot of positive things about it as well. I’m not advocating for a complete dismissal of awards season altogether., and neither is OH sophomore Emma Cameron.
“Awards season is enjoyable to watch because you get to see a variety of different people get awarded for exciting and cool things for many different categories,” said Cameron.
The future of award shows remains uncertain. However, the question remains: Will award organizations change their media landscape and regain their viewership, or is the industry destined to become relics of a long-ago era?
Only time will tell.
