At the beginning of every year, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) announces its nominations for the best of the best actors, directors, movies, and more to receive the highly coveted Oscar Award. Like every year, the Academy is met with both angry and excited movie watchers sharing their opinions on the nominations.
Some people believe that the Oscars nominations are not a good reflection of the movies released in 2024. However, that is not the only opinion.
“I believe that, usually, what gets nominated is usually pretty deserving,” said OH English and film teacher Amy Severinski.
The musical Emilia Perez is the most nominated movie at the Oscars this year with 13 nominations according to IMDb. Many are questioning whether or not the movie will continue winning after gaining 3 awards at the Critics Choice Awards.
“Because of all of the recognition Emilia Perez is getting, I believe they will win a lot of categories in the Oscars,” said OH senior Jocelyn Sanchez. “I feel like anyone who is nominated for any awards deserves recognition.”
Another movie that has been in close competition with Emilia Perez is The Brutalist. This movie had a total of 10 Oscar nominations according to IMDb.
“The Brutalist is getting a lot of love so far, but I haven’t watched it yet,” said Severinski.
Emilia Perez was not the only movie to leave the Critics Choice Awards with three wins. Wicked and The Substance also won 3 awards at the Critics Choice Awards. Wicked had a total of 10 Oscar nominations and The Substance had 5 nominations. All leading roles in these movies were nominated for Actress of the Year.
“I hope Cynthia [Erivo] wins best actress for the leading role because I think she and Ariana [Grande] did really good in the new movie Wicked,” said OH senior Samantha Ventura. “I think they performed really good for their musical parts.”
Some of OH students’ favorite movies of 2024 were not nominated for Oscars.
“My favorite movie was Sonic the Hedgehog, the new one that came out. I thought it shared really good messages during the movie which would definitely influence and help younger kids,” said Ventura.
Unfortunately, Sonic The Hedgehog 3 was deemed ineligible for the Best Picture category and received no Oscar nominations. Along with this film, there were other movies students looked forward to seeing in the nominations.
“My favorite movies of 2024 were Anora, Challengers, Inside Out 2, The Substance, We Live in Time, and It Ends With Us,” said Sanchez. Challengers, We Live In Time and It Ends With Us were not nominated for any Oscars.
“A lot of time and hard work has gone into these projects, so it’s important that all of these nominations are taken seriously and not just brushed aside,” said Sanchez.
Hulu will be streaming The Oscars on Mar. 2 at 6:00 PM CST.
