During this fall’s sports season, the OH girls’ volleyball team made history, becoming SPC champions for the first time in school history. The team also won their first round of playoffs on Oct. 20 against Nequa Valley High School in two sets.
The team has spent months preparing themselves for the upcoming games as they approach the end of their season, and these ladies are not ready to back down.
“We’ve all been working very hard: taking care of our bodies and just being there to pick each other up and just keep motivating each other to get better every day,” said OH senior and team setter Ava Flanigan.

The girls’ hard work and dedication have not gone unnoticed, like freshman Sara Gilio, whose improvement has earned her a spot on the varsity girls’ volleyball roster.
“Now, she’s like a whole new player: she takes criticism so well, she’s eager to learn. I feel like our eagerness to learn this season is really what’s making our team do so well,” said OH senior Alexis Terrazas, the team’s libero.
When faced with any type of difficulty, the team has not failed to meet any challenge.
“We’ve had some tournaments that definitely challenged us, but I think it’s always a really great thing to be challenged,” said Flanigan.
Putting in so much hard work has strengthened the girls’ bonds, resulting in amazing chemistry both on and off the field.

“Every one of us wants to do as good as we can in practice every day and that really motivates us to go farther,” said senior Sidney Hamaker, one of the team’s outside hitters.
As the varsity team continues to play past their conference games, the girls want to make it farther in the season than they did last year.
“We are hoping to make it past sectionals this year and get a sectionals championship,” said Terrazas.
Last year, the OH girls’ volleyball team also had a very successful season, being regional champions and making it to the first round of sectionals. Now, they continue to grow their accomplishments.
Along with these wins came an immense amount of support, from parents and students. The girls always support each other, collaborating through any tough rally. The OH student section can also be seen at the game creating their very own cheers.
The OH community is extremely proud of this team and is extremely excited to see what else they will accomplish.
