Ariana Grande scores first No. 1 with ‘thank u, next’

Pop superstar Ariana Grande has earned herself her first Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 with her surprise release of “thank u, next.”

The track’s title was discretely revealed on Grande’s Twitter just two days before the release. The now-deleted tweet simply read “thank u, next.”

“Thank u, next” was officially released Sat., Nov. 3 and instantly debuted at No. 1 on the iTunes Worldwide chart as well as the Spotify Global Top 200 chart.

“thank u, next” was officially announced as the No. 1 song by Billboard on Monday, Nov. 12. The surprise-release launched with 55.5 million total streams and 81,000 pure-sale downloads, according to Nielsen Music.

The track debuted at No. 1 with just over five days of tracking, compared to a normal seven-day tracking period.

Grande took to Twitter to celebrate her first No. 1: “yeeeeeee baby’s first number one.”

“thank u, next” has been confirmed by Grande to be the title of the singer’s upcoming fifth studio album.

I’m Dylan Jahnke, and this is my second year with 42Fifty, which I first joined as a staff member. I am a senior at Oswego High School, and I plan to study mass communications/music management in college. I hope to one day have my own radio talk show or get into artist management. If I’m not writing or editing for 42Fifty, I’m either working at Culver’s, hanging out with friends and family, or doing homework. I am humbled to say I began my 42Fifty career my junior year as a staff writer, then Arts & Entertainment editor first semester of my senior year and now Editor-in-Chief.
