Friday, May 3rd, the Oswego softball program is hosting a fundraising event, “the HIT-A-THON.” Going on three years now, the goal of this event is to keep the community engaged and help our softball team reach their goals.

“The softball girls go out into the community and find donors to sponsor their hitting,” said OH varsity softball coach Tiffany Murphy. “The event has been advertised by the softball team going and finding donors, posting on social media, and posting flyers around the community.”

With outreach across the community and the internet, the team is looking forward to the competition and having supporters there for fun.

“Donors will pledge a price per foot or a flat pledge amount, during the hit-a-thon. Players get 10 balls to hit and the farthest ball is recorded,” Murphy said. “This distance is then used to calculate how much money the donor donates based on the pledges per foot.”

As players gather donors and work hard for sponsors, the excitement has built up to see the outcome of their event.

“The players and coaches will each hit 10 balls, then the event opens up to the community. Once the team and coaches have hit, the event is then open for the public to hit, each person being able to swing for $10 with 10 opportunities,” Murphy said.

As the coaches and program work hard to pull together these events, the players put their all into this event to spend time with family and friends.

“The list of goals we have for this season is to raise funds to help in the cost of field improvements, new equipment, uniforms and other expenses incurred during the year,” stated OH varsity softball coach Paul Netze. “[Along] with many upgrades this season including the upgraded the dirt on the field to help eliminate rain outs, the team is working towards improving the press box and dugouts in the possible future.”

As the season has flown by, the softball team is still so excited to work towards this year’s goals and possible goals for next season.

“Every year there is a lot of participation and it is so much fun,” said varsity softball player Abby Schwab.

Taking place today at 3 p.m. on the Pathener Memorial Field, students and fans are encouraged by the Athletic Department and team to stop by and support the team, engage in this year’s Hit-A-Thon event.
