Kung Fu Panda 4 debuted Mar. 8, 2024, and with it came an abundance of mixed reviews. The mixed martial arts animal movie is notorious for its original movie and sequels. The series had made quite the name for itself using Jack Black as Poe the Panda, and its above-average story for an animated film.
However, it seems that audiences aren’t as blown away by the newest installment as they were with the originals. “To be honest, I was heavily disappointed [be]cause I really had high expectations and I thought it was [going to] be good,” said OH junior Amelia Perley.
We agreed with Perley, Oas this most recent installment of Kung Fu Panda was overall mediocre at best.
The movie had its comedic moments and had somewhat decent action, but the story fell short of entertaining, and new characters didn’t have as much soul as the originals. Overall, we felt that this movie did not live up to the original Kung Fu Panda, but did well enough to earn its rightful spot as a Kung Fu Panda movie.
“I would say I’m pleasantly surprised. It was about what you’d expect out of a kids movie, but it was actually good,” said OH junior Trevor Goodbred.
The introduction of new characters, such as Awkwafina, felt bland and rushed. However, the newest antagonist, the chameleon, felt pretty good. The chameleon’s main power is that they can turn into any one of Po’s past enemies. So one would think that this sets up a pretty good story.
This was not the case, the story was bland, and the chameleon wasn’t used to what could have been their fullest potential.
In the case of the movie being family-friendly, it is definitely family-friendly. The movie is great for kids and families to get some enjoyment out of. The humor is exactly as you would expect, kid-friendly and not as funny for adults.
“It’s a family friendly movie, and I personally thought it was pretty funny,” said OH junior George Victory.
