In addition to participating in OH Honor Societies and earning a strong GPA, volunteering throughout high school is another way that OH students can earn a cord to wear proudly at graduation.
“[Volunteering] can help to boost job applications, resumes, or college applications,” said OH counselor April Ponte.
¨I´ve been able to talk with parents and students, with pretty fascinating conversations, its so fun¨ said habitual concession volunteer and OH Senior Aidan Poniatowski.
There are many opportunities for students to volunteer within the community, given by both SD#308 as well as many outside organizations. Chris Hanley ,the Natural Resources Supervisor for the Oswegoland Park District, explained the various places students can volunteer through that are flexible enough to fit almost anyone’s schedule.
“We use volunteers at many of our community events. We have course marshals and pancake flippers at our Gobbler Hobbler in November, volunteers making sure no kiddos wander off at the Flashlight Egg Hunt each spring, and in June at PrairieFest many volunteers help with parking [and] welcoming guests during the parade and on the grounds,” said Hanley.
According to Hanley, the mission of the Oswegoland Park District is “to create opportunities for a healthy community.”
By earning volunteer hours through the Oswegoland Park District (OPD), students are helping the community in various ways while meeting new people and forming connections by both working toward the same goal.
