The spring musical this year, “Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812,” was an eventful one. Inspired by Leo Tolstoy’s War & Peace, it was a story about love, manipulation, and trust. There was much to keep up on and many characters involved, but it became a fun watch.

“There were a lot of scenes where the characters let out their emotions, like Sonia and Natasha where they got to yell at each other for their conflicting points of views,” said OH junior Hayden Esborn.

Before opening night, the Standing O Theater Company hosts an in school performance in the auditorium for the student body. During the performance, a plot twist took place.

During the performance, “I went backstage and stepped the wrong way, tripped over 2 chairs and broke my foot, then finished the show,” said OH junior Owen Shatters.

Below is a photo essay portraying the events of the show and characters.

Helene Bezukhova, played by OH senior Mari Morales, is the sister to the main antagonist. Helene is also a master of manipulation, “who represents temptation, luxury, and power,” said Morales. Credit: Liam Piekarczyk, 4Ffifty
Anatole, played by OH sophomore Quinn Schuck, who begins to make moves and flirt with Natasha, leaving her conflicted. Because of his actions and seducing her, Anatole ruined the lives and relationships of his peers. Credit: Liam Piekarczyk, 42Fifty
As part of the complicated story, Natasha, played by OH junior Hayden Esborn is in a marriage with Andre  (a soldier in the middle of war), where she debates if she is truly happy being a wife of a man at war. “She’s a young girl who loves Andre with all her heart, but then she meets another man and falls in love with him. After that everything turns into shambles,” said OH junior Hayden Esborn. Credit: Liam Piekarczyk, 42Fifty
Pierre, played by OH junior Owen Shatters, is a man who is essentially an old and depressed drunk. After he had a broken foot during opening weekend, he used a cane to help with his character. “The limp was 100% real and it felt like my own Tom Cruise moment,” said Shatters.
