Photo Essay: A poetic walk in the park
To celebrate National Poetry Month, both OH and OE teamed up to host Pop-Up Poetry in the Park. The event, held at Hudson Crossing Park in downtown Oswego, featured student poetry from both OH and OE. Different poems were put up on signs; some were award-winning from the recent Literary Festival, such as poetry from OH senior Emily Chorvat. “I was really happy with the recognition I felt my poem deserved," Chorvat said. "I really worked hard on it and thought outside the box when writing it. I believe it's the best poem I have written.” Below are the poems displayed in the park, all written by OH students.
Players and a comet: A play inspired by a complicated Russian novel translates to OH stage
The spring musical this year, "Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812," was an eventful one. Inspired by Leo Tolstoy's War & Peace, it was a story about love, manipulation, and trust. There was much to keep up on and many characters involved, but it became a fun watch. “There were a lot of scenes where the characters let out their emotions, like Sonia and Natasha where they got to yell at each other for their conflicting points of views,” said OH junior Hayden Esborn. Before opening night, the Standing O Theater Company hosts an in school performance in the auditorium for the student body. During the performance, a plot twist took place.

Ink, paper, kindness: New Letters of Love club takes off at OH this winter
Sometimes the smallest gestures can make the biggest difference. At OH, students in the new Letters of Love club are turning simple handwritten notes into messages of hope for people facing difficult times. “Every meeting that we have, there is a list that we should write on a card, and things we shouldn’t write on a card,” said OH senior and club president Emma Chabot. “So every meeting is us writing these cards, and then we send them to the global nonprofit, where they then send them to hospitals that are nearby.”
First in 12 years, Thilk represents OH at IHSA Speech State
OH senior Katelyn Thilk earned a spot at IHSA Speech State competition in Peoria the weekend of Feb. 21, something that has not happened for a speech team member from OHS since 2014. Was she happy? To say she was excited would have been an understatement for Thilk. “Winning wasn’t even my priority at that point," Thilk said. "I was just so thankful and excited for the opportunity to represent OHS.” Thilk represented OH at State in the Oratorical Declaration category.
