As April 1 approaches, so do Oswego’s trustee board elections. They are part of the 2025 elections in the United States, which mostly deal with state-level elections.
“I’m running because based on the past two years of being on the board,” said Karen Novy, a current member of the Oswego Trustee board who is running for re-election.
“I really enjoyed every aspect of being part of the village. You know policy making, budget oversight…being involved with economic development and especially with community representation being a trustee,” she said.
Four out of the six trustee seats are up for grabs this year as Republicans and Democrats look to secure their current seats and gain others.
“We have a wonderful village administrator and executive directors that handle our economic development and our finances and they all do a wonderful job so working closely with them is also very important,” said Novy.
The role of the board trustee is to oversee the day-to-day operations at Oswego. This includes activities such as dealing with finances, helping connect with the local schools, and the general welfare of the village.
Rachelle Koenig, who is also running for village trustee, was not able to be reached for interview, but her website states that “As a long-time Oswego resident and business owner, [she is] deeply committed to our community’s growth and success. Through [her] leadership experience, especially related to economic development, [she has] seen first-hand how proactive decisions can create an affordable and welcoming environment for businesses and residents, alike.”
“Our focuses for all students is that we want everyone to be prepared to succeed in life… whether that being in the trade[s], whether that be going to college, or pursuing some other career opportunity,” said Jim Marter, a current member of the library board who is also running for trustee.
Marter placed third in the Republican primaries held on Feb. 25. This moved him up to the trustee election which will be held on April 1.
“I think there’s a huge opportunity to change the direction and focus on those five things I said: student success, safety, security, physical, responsibility, teacher empowerment, and parent collaboration,” said Marter.
Regardless of who wins the election, the people of Oswego must use their voices to effect change in the village they care about.
“I think it’s important that [local] voices are heard by the local government,” said OH sophomore Christian Paige.
