Sonic The Hedgehog 3 rolled into theaters this past Dec., serving as a direct sequel to Sonic The Hedgehog 2 in the Sonic live-action series.

The movie was directed by Jeff Fowler and the screenplay was written by Pat Casey, Josh Miller, and John Whittington. They have all returned after their work on the second movie. Sonic 3 focuses on introducing Shadow The Hedgehog, a favorite character in the fandom.

“The director who made the other two Sonic movies had a lot of experience, and he had a lot of… potential story to pull from the Sonic IP,” said OH junior Dylan Johnson.

The movie’s plot takes many elements from the games Sonic Adventure 2 and Shadow The Hedgehog while still having original aspects of its own. It follows Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles facing off against Dr Robotnik, his newly reemerged grandfather Gerald Robotnik, and Shadow.

Shadow in particular gets much of the spotlight in the film. After being freed from a state of suspended animation for 50 years he joins the Robotnik to fulfill his lust for revenge on the world after the death of Maria Robotnik, The granddaughter of Gerald who was killed accidentally after trying to flee the facility after the government tries to shut it down.

“I feel like it’s a ‘for everyone’ movie. There’s not really very many groups of people that wouldn’t be able to just understand… that movie,” said OH junior Trenton Sendra.

The movie stands alone as a fun time for general audiences to enjoy and a worthy adaptation for fans of the Sonic franchise.

“I would recommend it to somebody who hasn’t seen it before definitely. You know, it’s got […] a dance scene in there that I think that people might need to see,” said Sendra.

On IMBD, the movie scores 7.1 out of 10, bringing it over its predecessors’ shared score of 6.5. It also has a total gross worldwide of 422 Million on an estimated budget of 122 Million. It’s already confirmed by Variety that a fourth movie is scheduled to be released in 2027 indicating that Sonic will be returning the big screen fairly soon.
