Oswego Boys Golf Is In Full Swing

Let’s go golfing with the Oswego Panther Golf team! Though the team has had its ups and downs, they now seem to be finding their groove.

The Oswego High School Boys Golf team’s season is in full swing with 11 meets played so far.

The Panther golf team had a rough start to their season, falling short in their first few matches. However, they have found footing with a win against Romeoville on August 21st, winning 173-199.

OH Senior golfer, Michael Sewart, emphasizes the status of their team.

“On the right road, but stopping at a gas station along the way,” Sewart says. “We’re trending up right now, this is where we want to be.”

However, the team was not able to beat out West Aurora. This would also be the same case against Joliet, as the boys beat Joliet and couldn’t beat Oswego East later on the same day. Most recently they’ve beaten out Plainfield South.

Looking at the Panther golf invitational placing, they placed 21st at the Providence Catholic Invitational with an overall of 342, 9th at the Lemont Invitational with 329, 6th at Big Run with 184, and 17th at The Den with an overall of 353.

“ started bad, but we’ve cleaned it up and focused up more,” Sewart said about their most recent win against Plainfield South on September 11th.

OH Senior golfer Justin Winters said the team needs the most improvement as a whole on their short game.

“This includes putting, chipping, and pitch shots,” said Winters. They have already spent a lot of time working on improving their short game and he sees it improving significantly by the end of the season.

With last season bringing two seniors to state, Winters explains that although the team “lost two of our best guys, I still think that we have lots of talent this year and can compete with the best teams.”

It seems the team’s leadership and collaboration is not the cause for the losses on the record this year.

“The team morale is very high and the guys always have a positive attitude,” said Winters.

The team morale can be attributed to the coaching style of the team. Winters says the team knows what to do because the coach “is very disciplined and doesn’t sugarcoat anything.”

This style of leadership and team morale will hopefully lead to the improvement they hope to see as the season progresses.
