Traditionally, American high schools have two dances a year; homecoming and prom. Students resent the return to school but have homecoming to gawk over. Closer to the end of the year, when kids are restlessly awaiting the start of summer, their silver lining lies within the approach of Prom. Both dances create bubbling excitement most high school students enjoy. But what about those months between the beginning and end of the year? What do we have then?

Many schools surrounding Oswego High School have the famous dance called turnabout. Turnabout breaks the norms of the classic dances by having girls propose an invite (such as Promposals) to the boys and they pay for all added expenses. This adds a fun twist on average formals and gives students a buffer to look forward to between Homecoming and Prom.

“My school has a turnabout and it’s popular amongst girls,” Lockport High School junior Lauren Lane said. “I like having a dance in the middle of the year.”

OHS hosted the BSA Ball this year to fundraise money and add some fun. However, many voiced the dance advertisement being poor, and people knew little about the festivities. We applaud the cause and the idea of a fun day, but it must be talked about sooner.

School dances are known to cost a pretty penny, but since turnabout isn’t a worldwide tradition in school’s, perhaps it can be a little cheaper all around. This makes it realistic for the school board to host one annually. Unless, of course, the district’s budget increases. But there are always more important things to focus on than a dance, in our opinion. And if anything, it’s the people you surround yourself with that make the dances memorable.

“A turnabout would give more opportunities to boy’s who are too embarrassed to ask,” junior Addison Gerwig said.

Granted, we are all for facing your fears, but some boys and girls will forever refuse to ask someone to a dance. But no matter who is asking, just do it! The worst thing they can say is no,t’s cliche but very true.

Do you agree that we should have a turnabout at OHS? Spread the word!
