Since the 11th century, people across the globe have practiced the art of crochet, using yarn and threads to create a wide variety of items, and it became a popular hobby starting in the 20th century. OH’s very own Yarn Club, located in room 115, teaches the still-thriving skill to students and staff alike.
“I’ve been crocheting for about 10 years,” said Melissa Grove, OH Special Education Teacher and the sponsor of Yarn Club. “Many, many years ago, my mom tried to teach me, and I unfortunately didn’t get very far.”
Grove did not give up, however, and enlisted the help of online support. “I went to YouTube, and I taught myself basically how to crochet,” Grove said, “and then I got pretty good at it, and it became a wonderful, fun hobby for me, and I wanted to be able to pass that hobby to others.”
Grove has been the sponsor of Yarn Club for four years and has helped spread her passion for crochet to others.
“I teach them the basics, like how to tie a slip knot, how to hold their hook, and how to do the basic stitches, like the chain stitches and the single crochet,” said Grove.
The Club is not only open to students, but staff are also welcome with open arms to try it out.
“I always see those samples they have put on that notice board,” said Teacher’s Assistant Poornima Jakka. “They have the dates of time where they’re going to start and where… so after seeing that, I emailed Miss Grove, asking if I can come in and learn some knitting… she was more than happy to welcome me.”
Yarn Club is targeted for those of all skill levels when it comes to Crochet, whether participants are starting from scratch or have the hang of it.
“Anyone can come in if you know something, you can teach. If you don’t know, you are going to learn,” said Jakka.
One of the club’s main appeals is that it’s a very relaxed one that helps develop a handy skill. It’s just really good to learn and to have a new hobby,” said OH freshman club member Selena Nunez.
Members shared that whether participants are an experienced crocheter or have never picked up a needle, Yarn Club has the right threads for anyone interested.
“I do really enjoy this, I always look forward to [our meetings] every Thursday,” said Nunez.
