It isn’t surprising that Oswego’s economy is attracting new businesses, as new stores are popping up all around town, and one of the newest is Crumbl.

The delicacy cookie store opened in the heart of Oswego on Douglas Road this fall. The location is dedicated to selling premium baked goods, focusing on quality over quantity.

OH senior Topazio Ochoa said she was excited to work at Crumbl as it was introduced in the Oswgeo community. “For sure, [I want to work there] because of hype. Honestly, social media has been giving [it] a lot of attention. But it’s excitement from the hype that’s [what really makes this bakery special].”

The Internet loves stories of upstart businesses succeeding, and Crumbl is a perfect example of this phenomenon. On Instagram alone, the store has reached an impressive 6.4 million followers.

“I love Crumbl. Everybody loves Crumbl,” Ocha said, “The community, the people I work with, everyone is very friendly. We all work as a team [at Crumbl].”

Fans of Crumbl have long praised its assortment of different cookie flavors, thanks to Crumbl’s weekly rotating menu system. This month, customers are invited to treat themselves to national flavors such as brownie batter, Holiday Tree, Snickerdoodle, Sea Salt Toffee Skillet, Raspberry Cheesecake, Sticky Toffee Pudding, and the classic Milk Chocolate Chip Cookie. Such a lineup is sure to attract attention.

“I first heard about Crumbl in person,” said Oswego resident Ivet Mowry. “The first Crumbl store I visited was their Naperville location off Route 59. I think the quality is great, but there are some issues,” Mowry said, referencing personal preferences for cookie flavors and level of sweetness.

The hype Crumbl generates can be subject to taste. “I think the quality of the cookies is delicious, but I think they’re a little too sweet… and sometimes overpriced. I definitely don’t want to die of, uh, a diabetic coma [eating these]”, said Mowry.

It’s true. Crumbl lists the price of a single cookie on its official website at $5, and a six-pack of cookies will set one’s sweet tooth back almost $30. From a quantity perspective, an 18 oz box of 54 Chips Ahoy cookies is around $5.

It’s not just the price tag that crumbles the cookies for some residents; the potential order wait time is also. “I think it’s ridiculous that people will stand in line for a freaking hour [in Chicago] while their cookies bake just to eat a 6-7 inch cookie. It’s not worth it [to wait that long],” Mowry said.

Ordering in big cities certainly jacks up the price of goods like cookies. But why flame a good cookie store?

“I mean, they’re good,” Peter Mowry stated, “It’s just.. I wouldn’t rate them like, crazy high… but if I got these for free, would I give them to a friend? Of course. They are that good.”

Ocha said that it is likely that more Crumbl stores would open in the future, which would be a clear indication of its success.

“It’s been [peaking in business] for several years already, as it’s been popular, but I know for sure they’ll open some more [Crumbl] places,” said Ocha.

Crumbl’s Oswego location has already started to attract steady business, with an online rating of 4.7 out of five stars on Google and multiple positive reviews.

“Everyone does do their part on the Crumbl cookies employee team,” said Ocha. “No one leaves another person behind, you know. And the most important part, the customers [are] always satisfied with their cookies.”
