From Nov. 24 to the 28, OH hosted the annual Hoops for Healing tournament to help raise funds for Camp Hope through Edwards Cancer Center. This was the first main event on the refurbished OH main gym floor since the early Nov. opening.

The game inaugurated the gleaming OH main gym floor, which was reopened after being closed for repairs after flooding in late August.

“I thought [the repairs were] going to be a lot longer,” said Varsity Boys’ Basketball Head Coach and Kinetic Wellness teacher Nick Oraham. “I think they fixed it in a pretty quick, efficient manner, and I think it looks really good.”

This tournament, Hoops for Healing, started in 2001, and OH has helped host since 2005. The tournament has helped to raise $387 thousand for Camp Hope since its inception.

“Camp Hope is a camp for the children of a parent or loved one who has been diagnosed with cancer,” explained Assistant Varsity Boys’ Basketball Coach Matthew Borrowman. “We have had well over 500 children participate in Camp Hope free of charge due to… generous donations through the Hoops 4 Healing Basketball Tournament each year.”

Playing this tournament was special for multiple reasons; it was the official start of the basketball season, it was the most public opening of the refurbished OH home court by Stalker Sports Floors, and the tournament supported a good cause.

“While each game will always have a winner and a loser by score, at the end of the tournament, they will all be winners because of the dollars they helped raise for supporting Camp Hope,” stated Borrowman.

In the tournament, OH boys basketball team won 51-48 against West Aurora High School, lost 77-56 against Neuqua Valley High School, and won 59-58 against Guildford High School, in which Brayden Borrowman hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer, scoring a record of 2-1.

“I’d say I’m satisfied [with the turnout],” said OH junior center Niko Jurkovic. “We came out with a winning record. I think we played pretty well, but we definitely could have improved on what we did.”

OE, who also participated in Hoops for Healing, won their tournament with an undefeated record of 3-0, defeating Neuqua Valley 74-65 in the championship game.
