“Wicked” is a magical Broadway musical that was later adapted for the big screen. This production is both exhilarating and heartbreaking simultaneously, with different elements used for the visuals, dance production, and music.

Part 2 of the film was released Nov. 21, and according to OH junior Delaney Segarra, “If you haven’t seen the first one, go see the first one and get caught up!”

Directed by Joe Mantello, “Wicked” is one of the longest-running shows in Broadway history. This musical was later adapted into a two-part movie, as seen today. The first part was released on Nov. 22, 2024, followed by part two being set to release about a year later on Nov. 21.

“It’s definitely giving me something to look forward to,” said OH junior Sam Stoller in anticipation of the new film.

Some fans are on the edge of their seats after Elphaba’s departure from the land of OZ, impatiently waiting for the new release. Although some found the cliffhanger exhilarating, Segarra said, “I think splitting the movie into two parts really gave the time to get into every detail.”

The time between the two movies was put to good use; the pause gave the production time to include beautiful visuals from the yellow brick road, to Glinda’s bubble, and then the entire Emerald City.

There is a strong division of people with a love-hate relationship with Wicked. Some find the actions of the cast disturbing or unsettling. While others would rather focus on the movie with intervention.

Segerra said, “Seeing all the behind-the-scenes process for the movie filming and all the work they put into it, you know how much the actors care about the production that they’re putting on.”

The new film delved more into the world of the Wizard of Oz, including elements from Dorothy and her journey.

Segarra said, “The second one puts everything into perspective and reveals all the fun, big secrets about the land of Oz.”

An example of this was Madame Morrible conjuring the cyclone, which brought Dorothy and her house to the Emerald City. Along with the friends she picked up along the way, the tin man, who was originally Boq. As well as the scarecrow, who was Prince Fiyero, and finally the cowardly lion.

Each of these characters had something in common: they were affected by Elphaba and her spells from the grimery.

This made “The inter-meeting of the story… really interesting and complex,” as Stoller had already interpreted from the first movie.

Although the story becomes even more complicated, the musical film reveals numerous jaw-dropping secrets. Such as the mysteries with Elphaba, the origin of the silver slippers, Prince Fiyero and his relations, and Gilindas’ involvements with the Wizard himself.

So if you are ready to peer into the secrets behind this magical story, follow OH Junior Kenna Ryans’ advice and “immediately purchase, before screening tickets.”
