Crosstown preview: Behind the scenes of tonight’s match-up

Today is the rivalry between OH and OE football teams at Ken Pickerill Stadium, and in the past five years, the Panthers have won four out of the five Crosstown matches.

This year, there will be a must-watch match-up between two rivalry teams who both have a good record: OH has earned a 5-2 record to OE’s 6-1.

“We’ve been practicing all summer,” said OH senior football player Mariano Velasco. “We’ve really been looking forward to playing the game and just coming together on offense, but working hard on defense, working hard, staying discipline at practice just really gives us a good edge against hard opponents.”

Oh senior Mariano Velasco has been a big factor in the Panther’s defense. He has five interceptions this year. This is one of the main reasons they have been striving. One of the key players on offense has been Teddy Manikis: he has six receiving touchdowns and he is a really big part in the OH offense.

“I feel like it would just be an accomplishment, but a good end to my senior year,” said Velasco.

Class of 2026 OH players have beaten rival Oswego East all three years they have played them. This win would have them a perfect record against Oswego East.

“Definitely going to talk about how we’ve grown up playing with these guys, going all the way back to Oswego Youth Tackle Football (OYTF). These guys don’t live far. We know them like the back of our hand,” said OH senior football player Devin Mata.

“Social media, it’s going to be a big factor of it,” said Mata. “Personally, next week I’m going to try to stay off of it. They do that stuff, they try to play mind games with you.”

According to Mata, staying off of social media before a big game is a really important thing for maintaining focus and mental clarity. Especially for this upcoming game, the OH football team will be aware of it. “If you let it absorb you, it will take you out of your game.” said Mata.

In the earlier Crosstown games this year, Oswego boys soccer won 2-0, the two goals scored by Vilius Adulcikas and Ryan Maveous.

In girls volleyball, OH won in two sets, the first set score was 25-17, and the score of the second set was 25-18. OE won against OH in girls flag football (24-6), boys golf, and girls tennis (6-1).
