OH has many opportunities for students, but some of the most notable are an impressive 13 different honor societies. Each group has its unique expertise and broad ideas to show off students’ abilities.
Take, for example, the multiple language honor societies offered at OH.
“Being part of a World Language Honor Society is unique because it recognizes not only academic achievement but also a student’s passion for language and culture,” said World Languages Head of Department Holly Fournier.
“It connects students to a global perspective and promotes language learning within the school and community. It also may help students stand out on college applications by showcasing their dedication to language acquisition and cultural awareness,” she added.

Learning a new language is a difficult process but can be very rewarding. OH’s most popular language is Spanish followed by French, ASL, and German. Learning one of these languages not only helps in school, but also opens many opportunities beyond the classroom. Colleges and employers value those abilities to communicate with different cultures.
The OH National Honor Society isn’t specific to a certain content area, but they are dedicated to showing the community their ability to be leaders and show excellence not only academically but in their character. To apply for this honor society you have to have a 4.0 GPA.
“The NHS is mainly a service organization, so members get to see what events and organizations are important to the community in which they live,” said National Honor Society sponsor Amy Dillon. “Members assist in multiple ways and they should have pride in being able to help out organizations that can’t afford to pay for some of the help we provide.”
As stated in the Clubs and Activities Slideshow, “Mu Alpha Theta is the math honor society at Oswego High School. You are required to have completed 2 years of math in high school (Honors Geometry during 8th grade counts!) Maintain a 3.0 overall GPA, Maintain a 4.0+ Math GPA, Plan to take AP Calculus AB, BC, AP Statistics, or AP Computer Science.”
Every honor society has their own requirements in order to join, and this slideshow is given to students to use as a guide for those who search for an extracurricular club.
Not all require a 4.0 GPA or strict requirements, some are quite lenient, and students just have to find the one perfect for their individual interests.
I am a senior at Oswego High School, this is my first year being a part of the 42fifty staff. I am an Avid student and have been on varsity soccer for 3 years.

If you can, I definitely recommend joining an honors society. It’s a good learning opportunity, not to mention that it looks great on resumes!
