The co-op Commotion team kicked off the season with high expectations, practicing up to five hours a week in order to be at peak performance. During their most recent competition on Feb. 15, the team won 4th place overall at the Manteno High School Main Event.
“Being in Commotion is just an amazing opportunity and experience,” said Commotion member Rhiana Martinez. “We really are all one big family. [We] treat each other with respect, hype each other up, and we all support each other! Working with Commotion is so much fun! Everyone is super nice and welcoming,” she said.
According to the Oswego Commotion Instagram account, senior soloists Sebbie Poniatowski, Chayse White, and Ava Rose Michelon gave outstanding performances at the Manteno 4th place competion.
On Feb. 8-9, the team placed 4th overall at the Crete-Monee Show Choir Spectatular, also earning the People’s Choice Award.

Team members also share excitement in working together. Not only is Commotion about teamwork, but also about the leadership shown from those captains, bringing the team together and reflecting results on stage. Seniors on Commotion have been together all 4 years of high school and have all created deep friendships.
“There’s not a lot of opportunity for show choir in college, but I don’t think I would if there was. It’s fun, but it’s not something I’d be interested in with a completely different group of people. I enjoy the people I’m with,” said Commotion team member Ross Hatzinger.
The Commotion team shows a lot of teamwork and ability to not only achieve high placement in competitions, but they also maintain a level of respect and fellowship within each other.
“We work with our Road Crew, [as] they help build our set/props and overall help us in our show too. We also work with our band, as well as the parents that help with costumes and food/fundraisers,” said Martinez.
According to Martinez, the Road Crew is the biggest support group behind Commotion. They make sure everything is set and ready for the singers and dancers to perform. It’s all one big family.
“Leadership in Commotion is shown by our Vocal and Dance Captains. They always meet 30 minutes before our practice and plan our practice for the day,” said Martinez.
“They also lead our warm up and they give us feedback to make us better and grow as a team! They want what’s best for our team and self-improvement and show great leadership in Commotion,” she added.
