As of early December this winter season, the OH boys bowling team has started off strong, beating most of their adversaries.
“We’re doing great, just yesterday was the first loss in the season,” said JV bowling coach Jason Tungate.
There is a group of people who are willing to dedicate their free time to the sport and try consistently to improve, as well as a trio of coaches willing to help those bowlers.
The strong performance can be attributed to the high amount of effort from the coaches. They are consistently trying their hardest to release the potential of the players. Most of the players are good, but still always have things to work on. It could be anything, from learning the basics for new players or building the right head space for players who have experience and give their all into the sport.
The coaches are consistently trying to improve the players. The goal of the varsity coach is to get the players to become sectional, regional, and state qualifiers. On an individual level, varsity coach Tim Arnold believes most of the players can make it with enough effort.
“I definitely think that we have any of the top six [players] that are going [to sectionals],” said Arnold.
On a team level, the coaches will try to lead the varsity team to sectionals and general triumph over the other schools.
The JV coach also has individual and team-wide goals, but his are different than the varsity coaches. His goal is to teach the fundamentals of bowling to new players.
“This is [some players’] first time ever really trying to bowl and it goes down to the same thing, like just grasping the knowledge and the fundamentals,” said Tungate.
Using the things they learned to dominate the other junior varsity teams. The team also puts in their effort to supporting themselves and each other, forming a supportive and non-judgmental culture that’s beginner-friendly.
