Unreleased but far from unknown: Chappell Roan’s newest and groundbreaking singles

Chappell Roan has been one of the fastest-growing pop stars this year. Much like many teens across the country, OH students have fallen in love with her music and fiery attitude. Recently, she has begun to tease new projects by enticing unreleased music and posting mysterious social media posts.

On Sat., Nov. 2, Chappell Roan debuted her newest unreleased song, “The Giver (She Gets the Job Done),” live on Saturday Night Live. This overnight pop superstar wowed audiences nationwide with her stunning look for this performance.

Ditching her usual modern and drag-inspired aesthetic, she took a complete turn and entered the stage in a full country outfit. In addition to this personal change, she also changed her stage and band to match her Western aesthetic.

Roan’s newest sapphic anthem explores a woman’s realization that she can only be properly loved by another woman, ditching the traditional heterosexual structure of romantic relationships.

“Her music means to me that I can have my own performance, it allows me to express myself and for me to be me. Her music has impacted me by not being afraid of who I am and embracing it,” said OH junior Lucas Arroyo.

While a large aesthetic change, this song doesn’t stay far from her iconic brand. Roan’s discography features almost exclusively sapphic songs with themes surrounding breakups, unrequited love, and acceptance in her debut album “The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess.”

“I love the songs Coffee and Kaleidoscope, I feel like Chappell Roan just gets it,” said OH senior Emma Garcia.

“The Giver” has tantalized fans since its debut, making them plead across social media platforms for Roan to release it for streaming. It isn’t the only song making dedicated super fans check their Spotify often, though, as Roan has a second unreleased song- “The Subway.” This song debuted at the New York Governor’s Ball Festival on June 9, 2024, and launched Roan even further into stardom.

According to a recent NBC News article, “The Subway” and “The Giver” are set to be released together on an upcoming album, although no release date has been set.

“The Subway” is a sapphic pop ballad, diving thoroughly into feelings of loss and heartbreak after a breakup. It’s a massive hit among fans, with Roan performing it at nearly every show she has done this year after its debut.

“I want to see her perform these songs in concert, they are really good and it would already make the fun and energetic atmosphere of her shows so much more endearing,” said Arroyo.

Although these songs are massively popular, Roan has yet to express any timeline for their release. Much to the dismay of her fans, She described in heartfelt performance monologues that she simply enjoys performing these songs, with no intention of releasing them soon.

“I would love for her to release these songs, I hate listening to them through Spotify podcasts and I want them to be streamable on all apps,” said Garcia.

Not all hope is lost, however, as Roan has teased not only the release of these songs but an entirely new album. In a recent Instagram post, she played off Love Islands’ trademark tagline, saying that “it is time to welcome a hot new bombshell into the villa”, presumably teasing that a new album is set to replace her smash-hit debut album.

In addition, her publication team promoted this new album release, with her producer saying that they already have five tracks prepared for release. A New York Times interview revealed that this new album would feature a new and improved version of Roan that fans were sure to love.

“I’m not ready to see what Chappell does next, her music holds so much weight I’m anticipating this upcoming album,” said Garcia.

Millions of her fans are beyond enthusiastic about these new song releases, and even more ecstatic about the idea of an entire album release soon. Both “The Giver (She Gets the Job Done)” and “The Subway” promise a groundbreaking new album from this overnight superstar.
