Although the boys and girls golf seasons have just begun, they have both started off with great success. The golf program has boasted four student Athletes of the Week within the past two weeks, demonstrating their commitment to smashing goals and reaching new heights.

“The guys have done a really good job, we are 6-3 in Conference right now,” said boys Varsity coach Chad Pohlmann. “We’ve finished top six in all of our events so far.”

The boys aren’t the only ones dominating tournaments, OH junior Kendall Grant has already been awarded Athlete of the Week and has continuously smashed her own goals.

“My season is going very well so far,” said Grant. “I have broken my 18-hole PR twice already and have done well in most of our matches.”

Both teams have done well in competition, overcoming many challenges and difficult opposition to make OH proud. Golf is an ever-evolving game, as the outdoor setting makes every stroke a calculated decision.

“Golf is one of those games where it’s really hard and you can’t ever master it,” said Pohlmann. “It’s very challenging [[. . .]] there’s always different courses, different weather, and your game changes from day to day.”

The boys team has undergone some major changes this season with five sophomores joining after setting new records on JV. While the team may be very young, they are working hard to not only make this season a success, but also set themselves up for even greater things in the future.

“I think that this season is different from last year because we have a deeper team. If someone has a rough day, we have other players who can step up for the team,” said sophomore Jax Baker.

Students aren’t the only ones who have felt the community that has been created this season. The coaching staff has been amazed by the way they have worked together to reach their goals as a team.

“The competition we face is really hard but we definitely can do it,” said Pohlmann. “Those guys will be able to compete in Conference and Regions for the next couple years.”

While these teams have had great records so far, nobody on either team is willing to lose sight of their goals for later in the season. Both teams have expressed a desire to continue their Conference successes and use that momentum to propel them to State competition.

My main goal for the season is to make it to State,” said Grant. “I’ve worked a lot at practice for the physical aspect of that but I have focused a lot more on the mental side as well.”

Competition isn’t the only goal these teams have, coaches are working hard to help students improve their skills throughout the year, even during the winter.

“We are looking at trying to build an indoor simulator room so kids can practice all through the winter,” said Pohlmann. “[It will help them] continue to get better and improve.”
