The OH girls bowling team’s season has ended with another impressive run. The Varsity and JV teams had impeccable records the past few months, with 11-3 and 9-5 overall records, respectively.

After receiving qualifying placements in conferences, regionals, and sectionals, the teams competed together in the IHSA tournament and placed 12th overall.

“We have some of the best bowling in the state, [including] in our conference. We had a successful season and even though we didn’t win Conference [[. . .]] we had a winning record,” said OH girls bowling head coach Daniel Okoren.

Scores aside, the experience of being on the girl’s bowling team appears to be one of the best parts of being involved in the sport. Despite being based on combinations of individual scores, bowling is still a team sport and the OH girls bowling team worked together through each competition.

“For us, it’s more individual but added all together as a team so you get to know the people a little better even during gameplay,” said team captain and Athlete of the Week winner for bowling senior Amber Lymenstull.

The amount of time and work put into the season is extensive, but it was necessary to pull off what the girls achieved this year, and going forward they hope to continue improving.

“The team has come very far in the last few years and I think they’re pretty set right now to really improve it,” said senior bowler Madi Watson.

Going into the season, one of the biggest challenges was recovering from the loss of last year’s seniors, much like many other sports. Now, that the season is over, the team will have to recover from these losses as well, but there is confidence in their ability to overcome this challenge.

“I would love right now just to set our goal of returning the team to State [but] it’s going to be difficult. We knew that at the end of last year, it was going to be difficult losing some really quality senior bowlers, and we’re doing it again, so right now, that’s my goal,” said Okoren.

Although the outcome of the State tournament was different from what the team had been hoping for, they were still able to succeed at a very high level.

“I don’t think we ended where we thought we had the talent to end, but all in all we made it to State which not many teams can say,” said Lymenstull.

Overall, the team had a great season and is ready to get started with preparing for next season. Despite having so much time practicing during competition time, the real work begins before the season has even begun, so the results of the next season rely heavily on the work that athletes put in before it begins.
