Kacey Musgraves, a country-pop sensation that has gained a loving monthly listener count of over 25 million on Spotify, has grown into a more mature reflection of her self-growth over the years in her newest single, the title track for her upcoming album, “Deeper Well.”

“I think this song shows a lot of growth from her, she’s been in the country music light for, like, the last 10-ish years, and a lot of her songs have similar themes to them, but in this one, I relistened to it today and watched the video today, and it shows a lot of growth from those younger years,” said Kathleen Shuma, an OH special education teacher.

The new single itself was released a day before the music video release on Feb. 7.

The song and its music video were well-received by fans, receiving over eight million streams on Spotify to date; the music video received one million views on YouTube.

Shuma also said the music video goes well with the title and theme of “Deeper Well” in general, stating that it “goes well for the lyrics to it, kind of a lot of things floating up with seeing her kind of, deeper well, but letting go of things, getting lighter.”

The song starts with light guitar and vocals that are soft like velvet. The listener is then hit with a gentle bass and a more complex guitar. We are then hit with a pleasing, airy vocal effect when she sings the title. Then, an instrumental follows that as well, something similar to light chimes. The warmth of her voice and the comforting chords of the guitar make this particular song a profound way to preview an album.

In this music video, viewers are placed in an ethereal space of nature, reflecting the overall feeling of this song insanely well.

Musgraves dons a flowy brown dress-sweater combination as she strolls along a path, with turf floating around her, while following a light. This is my favorite scene, as the symbolism of her blindly following a light and still wanting to let go of what no longer serves her is executed gracefully.

The video also syncs with the lyrics exquisitely when she stops following the light and starts to bridge her own path by walking along the shore of the ocean, therefore freeing her from the person she is talking about in this song.

The video direction and the placement of the visuals were excellent.

This song is a calming ballad playing with the aspects of maturity, and even at the age students at OH are, they can still relate to the themes of growth and maturity.

Listening to this song can help serve as a reminder to let go of people and things that no longer support your growth, and the toasty guitar mixing with the soothing vocals is quite an enjoyable and comforting listening experience.

The video’s exquisite display of nature and intriguing visuals overall make a watch worthwhile.
