The Marvels, the newest superhero film produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, released on Nov. 10 to bad reviews and viewer disappointment. However, even though I naturally expected another disappointing film, I found it heartwarming and entertaining.

The addition of Nick Fury topped the film. The movie might not be perfect, but it certainly was better than the reviews online stated. Working at the theater for a year allows one to work and experience a bustling workspace for movies, especially the highly anticipated ones.

Kendall 11 employee Emmanuel Hernandez shared, “We had prepared for a huge crowd for its release, so we had a handful of people working. But to our surprise, the crowd wasn’t even close to reaching the door.”

While The Marvels may not have garnered the same level of anticipation as previous releases, there were still individuals hopeful for its impact on the franchise. “The Marvels was a fine movie. I don’t think the hate it receives is fair. Overall, it is a decent film, not anything special but decent,” said Hernandez.

The movie is a sequel to Captain Marvel and a continuation of the television series “Ms. Marvel.” It features three main characters: Carol Danvers (Captain Marvel), Kamala Khan (Ms. Marvel), and Monica Rambeau. Many highly successful films often align with the Marvel and Disney franchises. However, the recent Marvel release fell short of those expectations.

Recent Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) films have left fans disappointed. Some of these movies include Eternals (2021), Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022), Thor: Love and Thunder (2022), and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (2023).

According to IMBD, the film grossed $187.9 million worldwide, with a gross production budget of over $270 million. The revenue is substantially lower than the production cost, indicating that the film did not get the attention it anticipated.

OH senior Elijah Duran said, “With such a large budget, you think the movie would be all grand. However, the CGI was horrible. The Plot felt bland, and there was no character development. I used to consider myself a Marvel fan, but Marvel went downhill after Avengers: Endgame, and this movie proves that.”

The critique on poor CGI and lack of character development and plot elements reflects a collective sentiment shared by some fans.

“It was more entertaining to watch than the previous installment; it gave Carol a much more improved and complex personality” said senior Jarethzy Trenado. “‘Ant-Man Quantumania’ was by far a way worse film than this, yet it still performed better at the box office.”

Opening week made around $47 million at the domestic box office and was a blow to the MCU, making it the worst debut in MCU history. While “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” made $106 million.

Kendall 11 Classic Cinemas manager Maria Tochimani said, “We expected a bigger crowd than it was. The audience liked the movie, but they weren’t wowed.”

For the past couple of years, the Marvel franchise has taken a negative hit and has failed to deliver movies that satisfy its die-hard fans. However, the negative feedback on the film tends to be hardcore fans.

Despite initial expectations based on negative reviews and online reputation, the film was unexpectedly heartwarming and entertaining. The addition of the characters Kamala Khan (Ms. Marvel), Monica Rambeau, and Nick Fury working as a team with Captain Marvel elevated the overall experience.

While acknowledging imperfections, the movie did not deserve the level of criticism it received online.
