Every person celebrates in their own way with different people and traditions, and Thanksgiving is no exception at OH.

One of the larger events in-building is the Restaurant Management course’s presentation of traditional Thanksgiving foods as prepared by the students and served to faculty and staff members. However, there are more traditions that take place outside the school setting.

According to junior Seth Arndt, his family “plays party and board games every year with family and friends. Games like Monopoly, Uno, Among Us, and Mario Party. Anything really to bring the family together.”

Arndt’s tradition displays a major trait that plays a big role in Thanksgiving culture: family and community. These core values reveal themselves through group activities like family dinners, group games, and just celebrations in general.

According to a survey conducted by 42Fifty staff, 76% of OH students enjoy the holiday time with family and another 23.5% include friends in that celebration.  Every student’s celebration is unique and special, each with their own traditions and food. The Thanksgiving dinner is another large part of this holiday, if not the largest part.

According to the survey, the favored Thanksgiving food by 29.5% of the student body is mashed potatoes, followed by baked macaroni and cheese at 23.6%. Based on survey results, food is a large part of the OH community’s Thanksgiving traditions.

Students are not the only ones with Thanksgiving culture and celebration. Eloy Carrera, a member of the OH custodian staff, shared his traditions. During the holiday, Carrera said he celebrates at a big banquet hall with a big group of close friends and family. Everyone brings in a dish, and everyone can take home a dish in a to-go box.

Respondents also shared that giving thanks is a significant part of the holiday, as that is what Thanksgiving is all about. Arndt is thankful for friends, as this year brought tons of friends and family together. Carrera is thankful for his family, friends, and job. Carrera continued by saying that everyone here at OHS is wonderful and caring. One response to the survey stated that they are thankful for their “loving family and amazing friends I made through band!”

Thanksgiving has come and passed, and now OH community is settling down and preparing for the end of the semester with winter celebrations including the new year.
