Oswego High School’s digital journalism publication, 42Fifty, won a Golden Eagle from the Northern Illinois Scholastic Press Association (NISPA) at its annual conference on April 12. Three students also received individual awards in column writing, feature writing and sports writing.
The Golden Eagle is NISPA’s highest recognition of overall excellence. This is Oswego High School’s first time winning a Golden Eagle. The publication also won a gold certificate for overall performance out of 25 schools in the web publication category.
“I’m incredibly proud of everyone on the publication,” Faculty Adviser Ms. Sarah Hands said. “The fact that 42Fifty has won this in its second year is just outstanding.”
Senior Staff Writer Ben Larson received a blue ribbon in column writing for his article “The need for tighter security at OHS.”
Junior Online and Blog Editor David Brant received an honorable mention in feature writing for “‘I am now myself’: Coming out as bisexual in Oswego.”
Sophomore Sports Editor Alex Mielcarz received an honorable mention in sports writing for “Parker leads Panthers to blowout win over Crosstown rival OE.”
“After a full year of working with this staff, it’s so heartwarming to see us grow,” senior Editor-in-Chief Riah Trevino said.
My name is Jamani Reed (JUH-MON-EE, not JU-MON-GEE), and this is my third year on the 42Fifty staff. At school, I'm involved in BIONIC, WE Club, OATS, and Scholastic Bowl. Outside of school, I work at Culver's and Chick-Fil-A, and play piano. I enjoy reading, hanging out with friends, and watching/playing sports.
