Senior Column: A perfect sunset
If there’s one thing that my four years of high school have taught me, it’s not to take the people in my life for granted. I didn’t want to write this senior column originally, but I feel like I should. I feel like I should say all the things that I’ve always wanted to say before, but was too afraid or anxious to do so.
Freddie’s Off The Chain: Serving a community and delicious food
The new Mexican cuisine restaurant, Freddie’s Off The Chain, recently opened up in downtown Oswego on Apr. 1. However, Freddie’s is already more than familiar with the food business, starting out as a food truck after the passing of the owner’s son, Freddie. Freddie’s General Manager, Armando Duran, said, “My older brother’s name was Freddie…he had battled with drug addiction, and he ended up passing in 2017. My mom [[Mona Herrada]] was kind of lost, but my brother always wanted her to open a restaurant, so that’s kind of how the taco truck started going.”
[SATIRE] Fox River goes pastel, not green, this Easter
The village president of Oswego has declared today that they will be dying the river in five different pastel colors on Easter: baby blue, light pink, pastel yellow, bright lavender, and pastel green. Additionally, there will be an egg hunt held in Hudson Crossing Park after the dying. “I think it is a little unusual that they are dumping toxic chemicals into the Fox River," said OH science teacher Thackery Corn. "It might not be too great for the environment, but at least it will look nice.”
“The Electric State:” A dystopia lost in translation
Adapting a novel into a film is not always executed successfully. Unlike the “Hunger Games” series, sometimes, a fictitious dystopia representing the state of our world turns meaningless as it is translated from paper into the perspective of a moving camera. “Ever since we discovered cave paintings, humans have tried to illustrate their imagination, and then once we figured out words, then it was just an added bonus to bring both the creative written word and the creative visual art together,” said OH art teacher Michael Skura.
New Japanese store Daiso opens in Oswego
Oswego is one of seven Daiso locations in Illinois. Since opening on Feb. 8, people have been flocking to the Japanese store, filling up aisles, and wanting to see what makes it so special. “Daiso has been in Japan for 48 years and we have thousands of stores in every town everywhere in Japan, and out of Japan we are all over Asia, Australia, and Europe and other countries,” said Daiso worker Wendy Wong. “And this is the first store in Midwest that has [[the]] standard product [[section]].”
