OH staff and students alike are ready for the continuation of the 2026 movie run as the weather turns cooler.
Varying from Resident Evil to Avengers: Doomsday, the remainder of 2026 has many eagerly-anticipated movies coming out.
Over the summer, we got some great movies of all kinds, but I and my OH friends are excited to see what’s in store for the winter and fall. OH English 4 Critical Interpretations of Literature Forms & Composition teacher Amy Severinski said, “I’m really excited about the Tom Cruise movie… Digger,” which opens on Oct. 2 and has been nominated as the Most Anticipated Film at the Astra Midseason Movie Awards.
“I hope there’s also some strong stuff later on this year,” Severinski added when asked if she thinks this second wave of movies will be better than the first.
Resident Evil, a horror flim which was released on Sept. 18, has already done fairly well at the box office, but is not on the top of the “to watch” list, The film revisits the concept of medical outbreaks and mutated creatures; it is currently playing at Oswego’s Kendall 11 Theater on their GDX screen.
Not only is staff like Severinski excited for more films to be released, students are also awaiting the arrival of these movies. OH junior and A24 membership holder Ruby Wickman said, “I’m so excited for Primetime, and I have a free ticket with my A24 subscription.”
Primetime, starring Robert Patinson, recounts “To Catch a Predator” host Chris Hansen’s real-life goal to make television history while working to catch those who harm others. According to IMdB, Primetime has already been nominated for Best Film at the Venice Film Festival.
The entertainment industry has been booming throughout this year. IMdB has been right there, providing all information viewers might want to know.
While streaming has been a growing and popular medium for movie watching, the more traditional movie theater has been a bonding ground for all generations.
When asked which movie she wants to see specifically in theaters for the larger screen and drama, Wickman said “Primetime, because I think Robert Patterson is one of the greatest actors of our generation.”
Wickman already knows “Dune 3 will be one of [her] new favorites.”
Dune 3, opening Dec. 18, stars Timothee Chalamet and Zendaya, and follows Emperor Paul Atredies as he watches the fallout and chaos surrounding him. The film has already won and award for just the trailer: 2026 winner for Best Original Score in a trailer, as well as nominations for Best Fantasy/Adventure trailer and Best Summer 2026 Blockbuster Trailer.
With Severnski excited for Digger and Wickman excited for Primetime and Dune 3, the film industry is tapping into different generations’ movie-going preferences, and even here at OH, we are able to get a glimpse into that range of interest in the media world.
While these movies have some pretty big expectations to live up to, “we’ll just see [if I have] a new favorite,” said Severenski contently.
