Students are preparing to shine at the Crystal Gala this year at prom on Friday, May 8. Many things go on behind the scenes in preparation for prom. Read on for the ins and outs on how students assemble their final looks.
OH junior Ashley Dauderman said, “I bought my dress and shoes. I think I’m gonna do my hair myself and my nails myself to cut down on the prices because stuff is very expensive.”
It is advised by many that dresses be purchased months in advance. To ensure security in the outfit and provide time for necessary alterations.
OH senior Angela Hill said, “I got my prom dress in December. So I already had all my appointments scheduled 2 months ago.”
You can find prom dresses at the Prom Shoppe in downtown Oswego, a popular place where the options are pricey but incredibly cute. Or you could try my personal favorite dress shops in the Fox Valley Mall. There, you’ll find cheaper options with more variety due to how many stores there are dedicated to events like prom.
It’s not only the outfits, but the whole day of prom that is also an adventure: from the hours to getting ready, to the location for pictures, it is an all-day event. Hill said, “That’s too much to try and fit in a day, especially since prom starts at 6.”
It is well known that getting ready for prom is an all-day endeavor. Especially for those with appointments to get their hair, makeup, and nails done. Many appointments are made far in advance since prom season is busy for businesses.
This has made the fact that prom is now on a school day (Friday) a struggle for students.
“Having school on the day of prom makes it hard to prepare. I’m stressed about class and homework,” Dauderman said. “I feel like I’m gonna be very stressed getting ready for prom. It does not seem reasonable to have school on the day of prom.”
Prom season can be stressful. With all the preparation as well as classes, it can be overwhelming. Hill said, “Too much stress, we have prom that week, graduation, AP testing, and we also have senior finals the week of prom.”
Although the pressure is high, prom day makes it worth the stress. Students who have gone to prom in previous years have had great experiences and memories.
Dauderman said, “I went to prom last year, and my favorite part was seeing my friends and dancing with people.”
At the dance, there are opportunities to take pictures, eat, dance, and have fun. The most enjoyable part is being with your friends.
Prom will take place at Embassy Suites by Hilton Chicago/Naperville, on Fri. May. 8, from 6 to 10 pm. Be there to see the finished looks and what the hype is about!
