February is cereal-ously the best! It’s National Hot Breakfast Month, and the perfect time to celebrate the most important meal of the day.
National Hot Breakfast Month, held every February since 2006, emphasizes the importance of eating a nutritious and delicious breakfast daily.
“February is a cold month for most of us, so what better way to start our days than with a steaming hot breakfast… National Hot Breakfast Month was created to encourage us to get up and start our day the right way!” reported the National Day Calendar.
Egg-cellent local spots for breakfast
In Oswego, there is a large variety of breakfast options. Whether it’s a fast food chain or a family-run restaurant, breakfast is the perfect way to brighten your day.
A popular breakfast spot near Oswego is Riverview Diner, located in Montgomery. With beautiful scenery, a variety of options, great customer service, and homemade meals, Riverview is the perfect choice for a family breakfast.
“I like to eat at Riverview. My parents enjoy it a lot, and it’s just a nice place. It’s by the river, so it’s cute,” said OH junior Mia Gaspar.
At Riverview, my family ordered the infamous skillet, which is the perfect option for a savory breakfast, offering a selection of meat, eggs, vegetables, hash browns, and toast. The dish is plated beautifully and provides a nutritious, high-protein meal for the price of $8.25.
Riverview Diner also provides an excellent experience. The view of the river outside, the cozy aesthetic, and the great customer service all help in making the breakfast experience enjoyable.
Riverview Diner holds a 3.9-star rating from Yelp reviews, but I’d personally give it a perfect 5.
Additionally, a go-to breakfast spot for many is the Starbucks in Oswego. With quick service, Starbucks is the perfect place to grab breakfast before school or work.
“My favorite place is Starbucks. I like the coffee, and I like the cake pops. It’s very cool, the aroma the space,” said Gabriella Wayer, an OH sophomore.
At Starbucks, I decided to purchase some of the popular menu items. A strawberry acai, a cake pop, and a plain croissant, which came out to a total of about $10.50.
Starbucks provides a tasty and quick breakfast, but it can be expensive compared to other breakfast options.
Yelp gives the Starbucks in Oswego a 2.7-star rating, while I’d personally give it a 4.
Other popular fast food places for breakfast include IHOP, Dunkin’ Donuts, and McDonald’s.
“Honestly, I like McDonald’s breakfast,” said OH sophomore Addison Frye. “I love their hash browns, and I think their food is pretty good.”
No plates like home
You don’t need a restaurant to start your day right; sometimes the best, most satisfying breakfasts come straight from your own kitchen. February’s National Hot Breakfast Month is the perfect time to dedicate your mornings to making a delicious homemade meal.
“At home, I have toast with either raspberry jelly or cinnamon sugar, or sometimes, I’ll just have cereal,” said Gaspar.
Other popular meals made at home include yogurt bowls, oatmeal, protein shakes, and eggs.
Donut skip the most important meal of the day
For many, busy mornings prevent enjoying breakfast. The rush of getting ready for school or work leads people to skip the meal.
“I eat breakfast maybe once a week,” said Frye.
Other students enjoy this important meal even less. “Sometimes I skip it, and I have coffee instead,” said Gaspar.
Skipping breakfast can be a missed opportunity for health; a morning meal can boost metabolism, increase daily intake of nutrients, and refuel the body’s energy. February’s National Hot Breakfast Month encourages people to make time for breakfast.
Good Food’s article features quick and simple recipes to make for breakfast, so everyone can enjoy a nutritious meal even on busy mornings.
Some breakfast recipes include protein pancakes with banana, cheese omelette, and a healthy porridge bowl.
A toast to February
February’s National Hot Breakfast Month is the perfect time to celebrate enjoying a delicious and healthy morning meal.
Whether you’re grabbing a quick bite from a drive-through, eating out with the family, or in your kitchen, whipping up a nutritious delicacy, eating breakfast is an amazing way to start the day.
Although she admitted to often skipping food at breakfast in favor of coffee-only, Gaspar said, with a smile on her face, “I like waffles, pancakes, and French toast, especially with fruit.”
