OH implemented new gym rules that reduce locker room changing time from five minutes to four minutes and relocated equipment rentals into the locker rooms. This change, made by the Kinetic Wellness Department, aims to improve efficiency, reduce tardiness, and limit hallway loitering during physical education (PE) periods.

The updated rules apply to all students enrolled in OH PE classes and change how students prepare for class before activities begin. School leaders say the changes are intended to increase instructional time and improve transitions between class periods.

“We have gone from five minutes to four minutes in the locker room before the period,” said Nicholas Oraham, boys basketball coach, PE, and driver’s ed teacher at OH. “Rentals are now being done in the locker room and not at the rental closet.”

Orham said the decision to implement the changes was made by the PE staff. These rules were set for students “to help combat tardies, kids not getting to class on time, and loitering in the hallways,” said Oraham.

The new system changes where and how students receive equipment, requiring them to pick up rentals inside the locker rooms instead of near the gym entrance. The shorter changing time also means students must transition more quickly before class activities begin.

While a minimal shift, one student reported the reduced locker room time created challenges.

“I do not like the fact that we only have four minutes to change,” said OH senior Ivee Reese, “because sometimes I have to go [to the bathroom] and I don’t have enough time to change.”

Another student does not mind the stricter tone these rules establish, as it teaches students time management.

“I find them kinda reasonable,” said OH senior Samantha Watson about the updated gym rules. “The teachers say they are going to be more strict [in Collaborative PE,] since we are supposed to be setting an example.”

While some rules are new, already-established rules are being more strictly enforced. In addition to locker room and rental changes, some PE classes are also enforcing stricter expectations for shoes and pants.

Ultimately, with the new gym rules, students are encouraged to make sure they manage their time and bring their personal gym uniform.
