In the world of high school seniors, balancing schoolwork, social life, and future plans can be challenging. But for one talented student, creativity shines through in a unique way- a skilled nail artist.
What started as a simple hobby quickly grew into something much bigger. With dedication and practice, she gained her skills by experimenting with different colors, patterns, and techniques.
“I started the hobby of doing my own nails in June 2023. When I first started, I didn’t even think it would be a business or anything. I just wanted to have cute nails and not pay a crazy amount at salons,” said OH senior Julie Martinez.
Social media has played a big role in her journey, allowing her to showcase her work with her Instagram title, “nailsbyju1ie.”
“What inspired me to start the business was, honestly… my mom. She started asking me to do her nails, and as I got better, she said I should practice on a friend,” Martinez said.
With so many students and individuals booking with her, it’s apparent that Martinez’s talent has really made her stand out.
“I soon started to get messages asking for me to do their nails, and I did! I grew a love for it, so I created my nail Instagram and started promoting myself more,” Martinez said. “Without my mom, I probably wouldn’t have pushed myself to do other people’s nails like how I do now.”
As she gained her talent, she began receiving requests from her classmates and friends, turning her passion into a small business that fits around her busy school schedule.
“Julie has always been so flexible with me,” OH senior Alexis Clemans said. “She is super popular, so I have always booked her in advance because she definitely books up fast since she does such a great job.”
Martinez prioritizes her clients and tries her best to work around both of their schedules to keep her clients happy and satisfied. Her growing popularity shows how people put their trust in her work and skills.
“I’ve always felt welcomed when I come for my appointments,” Clemans said. “We’ve gotten close, and she always spends just enough time on my nails. We have great conversations throughout the appointment, so I love being able to stay and talk.”
Martinez’s clients value her for more than just her skills, but also the welcoming circumstances she provides.
Each appointment feels personal and individualized, as Martinez takes her time to make sure every client is satisfied, as well as connect with everyone who comes for their nails.
“It’s really impressive that she’s balancing school while doing nails at the same time. The talent and artwork she’s shown are really cool,” said sophomore Sana Khulmi.
Overall, Martinez has set a great example of combining passion with professionalism, setting a strong foundation for her success in both personal and career goals.
