Yesterday, Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) Superintendent Dr. Tony Sanders visited OH to celebrate student achievement and discuss issues, like mental health, facing schools.
While OH was not the only building Sanders visited in SD308, it was an important stop as the administration and staff celebrated their ISBE School Report Card Commendable designation. One other building Sanders visited, Long Beach Elementary, was featured in a video posted by the Community Unit School District 308 Facebook team. In this clip, Sanders gave high-fives, danced with students, and continued celebrations around the district.
Sanders, who said he has known SD308 Superintendent Dr. Andalib Khelghati for “a long time and this is one of the school districts in this role [as ISBE Superintendent that he has] wanted to visit for quite some time.”
Here at OH, 42Fifty reporter Ethan Monahan and videographer Aster Lasher covered Sander’s visit.
The change in cut scores, or performance level descriptors, can be found on the ISBE website for further detail. As Sanders noted, these cut scores changed because “for years, we had been misleading students to believe they were not ready for college, and many students were ready for college.”
Sanders talked about mental health in addition to academics. Mental health, Sanders said, is “the number one thing” facing schools. Additionally, the ISBE website offers mental health information, like Safe2Help, as supports for students, parents, and educators, with tabs on the website for each of these groups.
Sanders has served as ISBE Superintendent since in appointment to the role on Feb. 23, 2023.
