“Once Upon a Time,” (actually, last weekend), awash in purple lights, the dance floor shook with DJ mixes of popular music and a pit of prom-goers as they jumped in sweaty groups, having the time of their lives. Was this homecoming? Sounds like it could have been, but it was OH prom.
The Sat., May 3 prom at The Matrix Club in Naperville was lively, but there were no strong hints of spring romance in the air, leaving many couples feeling disappointed that they missed out on a romantic, slow-paced prom experience like they had seen in the movies.
“The music was pretty meh, I couldn’t really get into it,” said OH senior Antonio Mondragon, who attended the prom with his partner.
The music and high energy left people feeling as if it was an end-of-year second homecoming dance, which let many down, but also was a positive for prom-goers who enjoy more fast-paced events.
“I liked the music, said OH senior CJ Johnson, who also attended the prom with his partner. “It was exciting and fun.”
The energy at prom was polarizing: some enjoyed it, and some disliked it. However, there were some things that were agreed upon by most attendees, such as the mediocrity of the concessions served. The food that was served at prom was unanimously hated by most prom-goers.
“The food, that stuff was bad, it didn’t look good and it didn’t taste good,” said OH senior Courtney Johnson.
The food was undercooked, mediocre, and something that I would be disappointed in even if it were served at the school cafeteria.
The prom felt unengaging because people felt as if there was not much room to work with. The ratio of areas dedicated to tables and the dance floor was uneven, and there wasn’t room to dance, leaving people feeling cramped together.
“I felt like I was in a mosh pit,” said Johnson.
The prom was fun, but it needs a lot of work to meet the standard expected for the last dance of the year, and for seniors, the last dance of their high school career.
The music and cramped room made people feel as if it was a second homecoming dance rather than a prom. The food was also a major mood killer for many prom-goers, who did not expect to be served what felt like cafeteria food.
The prom needs work, and the school should definitely consider changing venues, DJs, and caterers.
