Spring is upon us, yet spring energy might still be lacking with the weather teetering between tornadoes and rain. To remedy this, people can focus on curating seasonal spring energy with music.
“I like the idea of a spring playlist! [It is] the concept that you are coming out of the winter, and [the playlist is] your bridge into the party season,” said accompanist for the Oswego Vocal Music Department, Mac Willaert.
How can one create a spring playlist? Below are some tips for getting into the season and celebrating spring.
Find your platform
The first step to making your spring playlist is to choose your platform. Do you have Spotify, Apple Music, or downloaded music on your phone?
Choosing the platform that satisfies your music findings can help you create the best playlist possible.
“I use Spotify, mainly because when I got married, my wife already had an account, so I just jumped on that one,” said Tyler White, OH Music Production teacher.
Each platform varies from advertisement policies to the price of an ad-free account, so if you do not have a dedicated platform yet, choosing one is key. When choosing a platform, look at the features as well.
“On Spotify, it will say ‘you can listen to this song’ [with] recommendations of [similar songs] when you are playing a song,” said White.
Knowing your platform is essential to making a spring playlist. You need to ask yourself, “Am I okay with ads?” This choice affects not only your listening experience but how much you spend monthly.
Platforms have many features to help aid your playlist experience, from Spotify’s recommendations or AI DJ to Apple Music’s “Find Your Mood,” which automatically builds your listening experience.
Find “safe bets”
Once you know your platform, you are ready to start building your playlist. Starting with songs rather than a name can set you up for success.
“If I want to be safe, I’ll [say] ‘okay, what songs do I like?’…what [songs] set me up for that mood,” said White.
Find songs that fit your idea of springtime. Artists that fit this springtime pop niche include Sabrina Carpenter and Chappell Roan.
“Pop music can have some affiliations with spring; I think that classical music has a lot of spring, and jazz has a lot of spring. Anything that makes you want to move or dance says spring to me,” said Willaert.
Expand your horizon
Most importantly, in the process of building a playlist, you should expand your horizons. Spring is considered to be a time of growth and reformation, so finding new artists and genres is key to creating the perfect playlist.
“Let’s expand our horizon a little here,” said White.
A playlist gives you a perfect time to expand. Using the functions and features of your chosen platform can help with this.
“[Spotify gives] a bunch of recommendations, I just click, click, click, then I just get them… If I like it, I like it,” said OH freshman Kathryn Collins.
Create a name
Last but not least, name your playlist. After you’ve curated it, you can name it whatever you want.
“I don’t even give them cool names, I literally call them playlist number one, playlist number two. I number them based on how I am feeling,” said OH freshman Brianna DeStefano.
Whether having no name or a highly specific name, choosing a name for your playlist is key to curating the perfect playlist. A name is an integral part of creating a personalized playlist.
Using these tips above, you can set yourself into a spring mood and create a playlist that transforms spring into a time transcending the dreary weather.
