The OH girls’ softball team is preparing for the upcoming season as spring approaches, and today they play at Ottawa today provided the game isn’t cancelled. The team intends to reach State after achieving first place last year, and they are ready to work hard to achieve their goals.

Head Varsity Coach Annie Scaramuzzi has plenty of optimism for the girls this season.

“With a strong core of returning players and some talented new additions, there’s a lot of energy and optimism heading into this season,” she said.

Tryouts have passed and the athletes are ready to start the season off strong.

Senior athlete Madelyn Lohrman said, “I think we’re going to be good this year, so I’m excited to play some good competition and just overall have fun as a team one last time.”

Senior athlete Abby Schwab also said, “Tryouts went great, there was definitely a lot of talent in the program and the coaches mentioned multiple times that their decisions were going to be tough.”

The goal of making it to State for the second time lingers in the athletes’ heads as they work together as a team.

“Our ultimate goal is to bring home a State title, but our focus is on taking it one game at

a time and doing the little things right,” said Scaramuzzi.

Every year is different and each time new goals are set for the team.

“This year, our motto is ‘one game at a time’, meaning we are going to focus on the game in front of us, not behind or super far ahead,” said Schwab.

Softball is a team sport and takes everyone, not just one person, to be successful.

“We have a selfless group that is committed to embracing any role that they need to on any given day because they know it will take everyone to achieve what we want to throughout the season,” said Scaramuzzi.

As the season begins, anxiety comes up about what future games will result in.

“I think the main thing I am nervous about is living up to the expectations and filling the presence that the seniors brought last year to make us so good,” said Lohrman.

The team is making sure everyone is all in and putting in their best effort for a good season.

“Our seniors are stepping up as leaders, and we’re making sure every player understands

their role and how they can contribute to the team’s success,” said Scaramuzzi.

Everyone on the team is excited for the games to begin and the coaches enjoy watching the athletes grow.

“The most rewarding part of coaching is seeing the players grow—both as athletes and as individuals—and watching their hard work pay off,” said Scaramuzzi.

The athletes and coaches have high hopes for this season and as the season begins, the harder the girls are going to work towards their goals.
